What is tailors chalk?

This tailors dressmaking chalk is a thin piece of hard chalk used for making temporary marks on fabric to aid more accurate dressmaking. The different colours allow for accurate and visible marks on fabric of all colours. Tailors chalk is used to make erasable marks, transferring pattern markings onto the fabric before you sew. We use it for things like:
  • Marks for seam matching
  • Zip and pocket positioning
  • Darts
  • Gathers and pleats etc.

How to use traditional tailors chalk

The sharp edge of the dressmaker's chalk is used to make clear, sharp marks. The white or coloured chalk marks will brush off or wash out easily once the garment is finished. Choose the colour of tailor's chalk you need - tailor's chalk is used on fabrics of contrasting colours, where the marks will stand out clearly. To keep the marks clear, it is helpful to keep the edges of your dressmaking chalk nice and sharp. This can be easily done by occasionally whittling the edges with a vegetable peeler! Colours can appear differently on screen, so although every care has been taken to represent them accurately, some variations may occur from real life.

Some haberdashery is also on sale in our shop in Bridport, Dorset, so on rare occasions stock may not be available where it appears to be online. We do our best to avoid this, if this occurs we will contact you to discuss the options, most can be restocked.
