Reupholstery can transform your furniture, and we sell some gorgeous upholstery fabrics that will do the job, but there is much more to bringing new life to old furniture than just picking a delicious new fabric. We sell everything you could possibly need to complete a reupholstery job yourself, but if you’d rather hand the job over to the experts, then read on!
Hiding at the back of our Bridport shop is an upholstery workshop, a place where you can bring your furniture for the magic to happen. Our skilled upholsterers Laura and Di specialise in modern and older furniture respectively, so you can be sure that your work will be done by someone who really knows what they are doing.
Di recently completed this little chair, and as well as showing some of the finishing touches, these photos also show a little of the process:
The restrained grey of this simple-looking piece of furniture conceals (from the bottom) many layers of webbing, springs, hessian and coir, horsehair, wadding, calico and more wadding before it’s finally ready to have the show fabric carefully stiched and buttoned into place. The upholsterer’s work also includes repairing and restoring the wooden frame while it is fully stripped down, so your newly upholstered piece will continue to look good for years to come.
If you have a much-loved piece of furniture that you would like to see restored to it’s former glory or reborn in a fresh new way, come and talk to us. We can give you an initial no-obligation estimate and, of course, advise you on the huge range of fabric we carry on the roll and ready to order.
One of our customers has had our upholstery department transform this lovely junk shop chair using our delicious zebra pattern chenille fabric. We think the finish is just fantastic, and you can see how the upholsterer has centred the fabric carefully so the zebra pattern looks just right. This quirky low slung no-leg chair is now updated with an equally quirky fabric, giving a totally individual finish which will look amazing in the customer’s home.
Even better, a project like this will not take much fabric – a single metre of fabric is often enough depending on the pattern. If you are inspired to try a project like this yourself you can now purchase the fabric directly on our website by mail order, by clicking on the picture below.
As the nights draw in, we are all thinking about how to get cosy for the winter. These tartan and wool fabrics are one way to achieve this (another is with clever choice of lining for your curtains).
When we pulled the samples off the shelf to put together, we were amazed to see what a lovely selection is available. The fabrics vary from 100% wool Harris Tweed fabric to lighter weight and less expensive polyester wool touch fabrics. The companies who offer these timeless fabrics and modern colourways include Abraham Moon, Chess Fabrics, Chatham Glyn Fabrics, Marton Mills and Prestigious Textiles.
Many of these fabrics are also suitable for upholstery, this is noted on the hangers or in our supplier catalogues, so please ask if you cannot find the details.

Also included are full-size patterns in a storage pocket in the back of the book; all in all a useful and well thought out addition to your bookshelf, and a bargain at only £8.99!
Most curtain fabrics can be used for making bags, and also many craft fabrics are suitable for smaller bags, or larger ones with use of a heavier interfacing. Prestigious are celebrating 30 years in the fabric business and we have a huge range of their sample books and hangers that you are welcome to borrow and take home. We always recommend you do this as it’s very difficult to carry a colour in your head so having the samples at home will enable you to see the cloth next to your existing colour scheme and to try it out in both natural light and electric lighting.
The offer runs until August 31st and any of the fabric that you order can be made up into high quality hand made curtains, blinds or cushions by any of our approved seamstresses. If you are not confident in your sewing abilities then click here to discover more about our curtain making service
This lovely old G-plan chair was given a quirky and stylish makeover by one of the fabulous upholsterers in the workshop attached to Livingstones.
The customer chose this richly-coloured upholstery fabric, which is a personal favourite of mine. It’s a playful geometric woven fabric in gorgeous colours that works equally well in a classic or modern setting, and will definitely stand the test of time.
While in the workshop this treasured piece of furniture was also repaired to stabilise the joints and the wood was polished to retore it to its full beauty.

With Melplash show only two days away some of our local customers might be testing out that cake recipe one last time to make sure it’s perfect for the yearly cake competition, I know that Tom at Livingstone Textiles has been busy trying to get his cake perfect for the big day… he’s been known to bake some beautiful cakes in the past! This year he’s planning on entering the men’s only class and will be hopefully making a Guinness and chocolate cake, the staff at Livingstone Textiles are hoping we might get a taste of some of the practice pieces.
Maybe you’re not so interested in cake baking as much as in the decorating of it. Sugarcraft is an amazing skill to have and last years Melpash show entries showed off the high skills that the people of Bridport have. We’re taking our pop up shop down to the show again this year and are really looking forward to seeing this years entries. We thought this cake ribbon might give you some inspiration for the occasion and could add the perfect finish to your cake!
Maybe you are entering a flower arrangement? Don’t forget we have a wide range of ribbons and bows that could add to your display. We stock a vast selection in the shop in Bridport, from Hessian ribbons to traditional satin in many colours and widths. These can add to your arrangement without distracting from the beautiful flowers. If you forget something or need it at the last minute we will have a small selection to chose from on our stand
If you’re coming to the show, how about a visit to see all those lovely arts and craft entrees in the craft marquee. One year there were some lovely bunting flags that had been made using many of our shop fabrics. We were delighted to see the work involved and that we could be part of that winners success.
We really enjoy seeing the beautiful crafts and garments that people can make from our fabric selection. Entrants put colour and pattern together in a totally unique way and when we see them entered into a competition we feel very proud to have been part of the story. We really can’t wait to see what sewing entrants pop up at the Melplash show this year.
The Melplash show offers a great day out to Bridport, full of agriculture, animals, machinery and local trade stands. If you’re traveling down to Dorset for the show, you can always pop in to the shop and see us if you get time, or pop across to our stand and say hello.
We supply foam to renew all kinds of seats, cushions ,beds and campervans. The foam we supply can be made super comfy by adding a layer of thick quilters wadding. This softens the edges and corners of the foam and gives a more rounded appearance to the cushion when the covers are back on. We often do this in house for our customers and we then cover the wadding with a layer of thin stockinette to help ease the cushions back into their covers . Foam has a tendency to grip the underside of many fabric covers and it can be a bit of a battle getting them back on to the foam, sometimes it takes three of us to do it in the shop and it can be quite entertaining to watch as well!
Here we will set out step by step a guide to covering your own foam cushions. All of the materials used in the photographs can be bought from our shop and we can also send them by mail order. Contact us to place your order over the phone.
Firstly, lay your foam out on the stockinette and cut out pieces for the top, bottom and side
Next you need to put the foam on some newspaper and spray with contact adhesive. Remeber to do this in a well ventilated area. Once you have sprayed on the glue, carefully line up your wadding pieces and lay gently in place, you only get one shot at this so take your time as it sheds if you try to pull it off and start again. Press down firmly. We do the top and bottom first then cut a long strip, spray glue it then roll the edges along it in one piece.
Once all the wadding is in place, cut a generous piece of stockinette. It stretches to unbelievable sizes! Open one end of the stockinette and slide the cushion inside then neatly roll the edges into little seams that sit along the edges of the cushion and pin in place with long quilters pins. This way you don’t end up with big lumps on the sides. Carefully whip stitch along the seam, catching the rolled seam to the cushion using a long darner needle and a good quality thread. Repeat the whole process the other end.
Your foam is now ready to be put back inside the cover and sat on. If you have any further questions on how to do this, you can contact the team at Livingstones Bridport on 01308456844
Oslo is a beautiful brushed poly-cotton fabric from Prestigious Textiles, the brushed finish makes it soft to the touch and the combination of the polyester and cotton makes it have a beautiful drape. Making it ideal for curtains and blinds. This softness, however, does not affect how tough the cloth is, with its 100,000+ rubs this fabric is tough enough for upholstery in a busy living space.
This fabric is available for order at both our stores in Bridport Dorset and Yeovil Somerset, where at both stores we offer a competitive making service, and for those of you that are sewers we can work out your fabric requirements taking the stress out of ordering your fabric.
For more information please contact us or pop into one of our stores and ask our friendly staff.
Livingstone Textiles are very lucky to have some very talented makers who work alongside us, that can make the most wonderful things from our beautiful fabrics and because of how talented they are its lovely when they get asked and trusted to help create our customers beautiful and amazing works into something more.
This beautiful tapestry was brought into our shop by one of our very talented customers and we were trusted to make into cushions for her. Its amazing to have been given that trust as this piece of art would have taken hours and lots of patience to complete. Tapestry is a skilled sewing technique where the sewer uses a special tapestry canvas which looks like a fine net or mesh. The sewer then uses a tapestry wool to sew the design which as you can see from the image is a simple stitch on a angle. The piece is only finished when the whole piece is covered in stitches. A range of different colours can be used when creating a tapestry and any design of the crafters can be created. As can be seen in these images the customer choose to create an image of some very beautiful flowers focusing on the colours yellow and green. She then chooses a lovely yellow linen fabric to finish the cushion with a beautiful piping in the yellow lined to finish and frame the piece of work. The linen really complements this piece because of its weave, which then adds flow to the tapestry weave.
Our maker has then added a simple yellow zip and finish off the cushion.
We have a wide making service with lots of makers that can help you with your sewing needs if you would like more information on what making services we offer please contact us or ask in store and we will be happy to help.
Two soft velveteen cushions made in this gorgeous rust coloured fabric have been made by a member of staff to revamp a lovely old reading chair. The cushions were piped in the velvet as well and a zip inserted at the back.
Velvet can be a bit tricky to sew as the layers have a tendency to creep as you feed the fabric under the machine but one way of combatting this is to use a walking foot. The fabric shown is available from Livingstone Textiles at only £7 per metre and is 150cm wide making it ideal for curtains, cushions and even dressmaking. It drapes beautifully into soft folds when hung and the texture catches the light. In this instance, it was chosen to complement the historical nature of the chair and bring out the warm colour of the wood. If you’d like to have a go at making your own cushions, our cushion pack is available and comes complete with any fabric you choose and a full set of instructions. It also makes an ideal gift.
We’ve got a jolly thistle fabric in stock that will make rather unusual curtains. Printed on a medium weight cotton, it falls beautifully as drapes and will compliment a room that already has tartan or checks in it. Also suitable for cushions and roman blinds as well as light upholstery.
