Down here in the Westcountry there is a fast growing trend for Shepherds Huts as a place of retreat and sanctuary.
Folks with a little bit of land or a large enough garden are choosing them as an option to rent as holiday accomodation too, cosying them up with little wood burners and simple living essentials .
At Livingstone Textiles we have furnished some unusual dwellings with our cloth, most memorably a tree house in a secluded valley not far from our front door. This week we’ve been working on a shepherds hut where a simplistic approach was requested.
Our client opted for a scandinavian inspired design of lollipop trees on a white background and an unusual lining. Choosing a ticking stripe for the reverse means that the little hut will look just as lovely from the outside as from the in and we think the effect is beautifully rustic.

The word “drop” when referring to curtains or net curtains simply means the total length of the curtain from top to bottom.
Standard curtains can hang either inside or outside a window reveal, on a pole or track. The drop is the exact finished length of the curtain. Where exactly this should be measured from depends on the type of heading chosen. If you are replacing a set of curtains and having the same type of heading, you can just measure the length of the existing curtains. Otherwise you will have to measure from your existing track or pole. If your track or pole is not yet in place you can make an estimate based on the planned position, but a final measure will be needed once the track or pole is in place. There are more details on our instructions on how to measure for curtains.
Confusingly, sometimes the word drop is also used to refer to one width of fabric used to make a curtain. For instance a maker may say they are making a pair of curtains with ‘two drops per curtain’. In this use of the word, it is interchangeable with the word ‘width’ referring to one full width of fabric from a roll. The cost of making a curtain may be quoted as an amount ‘per drop’ which means that for a pair of curtains with 2 drops/widths in each curtain you will pay four times the amount quoted for making.
Net curtains usually hang on a curtain wire or a pole. They are made with a channel at the top which the wire or pole passes through, or a series of holes for a cafe net curtain. The drop is measured from just above the wire or pole to the window sill, or wherever you want the curtain to finish. Usually net curtains are hung close against the window within the reveal so they usually finish just above the window sill in order to give privacy. Net curtains are made in a range of standard drops and so usually you will choose the nearest drop available that is smaller than your measurement to buy. If this would be too small, you can order the next larger drop and either cut down the net curtain, making a new channel or fold over the top to make it a little smaller.

At Livingstone Textiles we are proud to stock a great selection of linens suitable for dressmaking and curtain making. We hold beautiful soft linens from Russia, rough and slubby linens from Lithuania and beautiful herringbone weaves as well as traditional Irish linens. As well as our regular stock lines in natural colours we can also occasionally source limited colours in gentle washed out greens, oranges, yellows and blues.
We sell a lot of our linen as curtain fabric as its weight allows it to drape beautifully but one or two of our staff members have sewn clothing items from the lighter weights as it hangs really well and below we can share with you a lightweight hoodie that was made from a green/blue linen that was in stock last summer. Sadly this particular colour has not become available again but we still have other colours in stock. Some of our customers also print on our linens and turn them into unique cushions and tea towels.

A sneak preview into one of the Prestigious Textiles new fabrics that are to be released next week are these beautifully bold, printed designs of animals. These bright colours add a retro feel to the fabrics with the bold yellows and greens. We love the increasingly interesting detail that has been added to the black and white animals, although you might think that subdued colours like black and white on a bright flat colour might sink back and become unnoticeable with this design that doesn’t happen. It’s the monochrome design and detail on the bright colour that works so well because when you look at the same design on the more subdued colour, the monochrome animal doesn’t stand out as much.
The fabric weight that these designs have been printed on is ideal for curtains, cushions, and blinds, however, these are not suitable for upholstery as they are not strong enough for regular rubbing. However as mentioned above, these would make great house or garden cushions as they are fun and realistic. You could even jazz up your she shed! On the left, you can see the many different designs and colourways and they all work beautifully together. They will really add the funky look to your room.
This fabric range comes in 6 different colorways with 6 different animal designs including; ducks, foxes, hedgehogs, deer, owls, and pheasants. Each of these fabrics is 143cm wide although the usable width is only 137cm each pattern repeat does vary depending on the design. These designs are printed on a 100% cotton base cloth are also available in a splash and shower proof coated base cloth, meaning they would work well for outside cushions and tabling.
We think these are a really lovely collection of fabrics and colours. They are being released in September, meaning you can bring some late summer sunshine into the home and welcome the first jewels of autumn with these lovely bright colours.
If you would like more information on these fabrics please don’t hesitate to contact us with your details and the information you require and we will be happy to help and obtain FREE SAMPLES for you.
With Melplash show only two days away some of our local customers might be testing out that cake recipe one last time to make sure it’s perfect for the yearly cake competition, I know that Tom at Livingstone Textiles has been busy trying to get his cake perfect for the big day… he’s been known to bake some beautiful cakes in the past! This year he’s planning on entering the men’s only class and will be hopefully making a Guinness and chocolate cake, the staff at Livingstone Textiles are hoping we might get a taste of some of the practice pieces.
Maybe you’re not so interested in cake baking as much as in the decorating of it. Sugarcraft is an amazing skill to have and last years Melpash show entries showed off the high skills that the people of Bridport have. We’re taking our pop up shop down to the show again this year and are really looking forward to seeing this years entries. We thought this cake ribbon might give you some inspiration for the occasion and could add the perfect finish to your cake!
Maybe you are entering a flower arrangement? Don’t forget we have a wide range of ribbons and bows that could add to your display. We stock a vast selection in the shop in Bridport, from Hessian ribbons to traditional satin in many colours and widths. These can add to your arrangement without distracting from the beautiful flowers. If you forget something or need it at the last minute we will have a small selection to chose from on our stand
If you’re coming to the show, how about a visit to see all those lovely arts and craft entrees in the craft marquee. One year there were some lovely bunting flags that had been made using many of our shop fabrics. We were delighted to see the work involved and that we could be part of that winners success.
We really enjoy seeing the beautiful crafts and garments that people can make from our fabric selection. Entrants put colour and pattern together in a totally unique way and when we see them entered into a competition we feel very proud to have been part of the story. We really can’t wait to see what sewing entrants pop up at the Melplash show this year.
The Melplash show offers a great day out to Bridport, full of agriculture, animals, machinery and local trade stands. If you’re traveling down to Dorset for the show, you can always pop in to the shop and see us if you get time, or pop across to our stand and say hello.
Bridport is known for its ambience and hosts some lively community festivals. We also have a vibrant music scene in the town, one genre of which is Folk Music and a handful of regular folk music performers have decided to showcase some of the best local talent in Dorset by hosting the First Ever Bridport Folk Festival. What’s more, it’s a Free Festival!!
Folk music, song and dance are part of our rich British culture and it is positively thriving among the young and old alike in the town and deep into the hills of Dorset. To showcase our heritage, The Bridport Folk Festival will be hosting over 76 acts, more than 50 of these acts are musicians that will be singing and playing at several venues across the weekend of the 11th, 12th and 13th of August. There will be 3 main stages all within the town centre, one in Bucky Doo, one in The Borough Gardens and the main stage will be on the Millenium Green. All stages are free to enter and any money collected will be shared in half with the RNLI.
Livingstone Textiles are very proud to have supported this event with both sponsorship and materials to build the stage sets and providing a venue large enough for a community sewing bee to stitch the vast quanities of extra wide calico needed for the stage roofs. The calico that has been used is 3 metres wide from selvedge to selvedge so it’s ideal to use as a lightweight cover in the event of showers and as shade from the sun. The stages will also be featuring backdrops made from our polycotton plains and draped with our two tone organza and we’ll be featuring pictures of these on the blog after the event.
Folk Festivals are renowned throught the UK and as well as the numerous song, dance and instrument workshops that take place are always the Morris.
Morris dancing can be traced back at least to the time of Shakepeare in our country and it is widely believed that the Moors people brought it here when they settled in this country, hence Moorish/Morris dancing. This is just one of many different theories but one things for certain, it’s certainly not just for men. We have some great female and mixed dance teams in Dorset and they can all be seen dancing enthusiastically throughout the summer at West Bay, Bridport, Charmouth, Lyme Regis, Swanage and at many small villages between from May to September. Livingstone Textiles holds a vast stock of ribbons and bells, threads and fabrics and are suppliers to Bridport’s very own morris team, Wyld Morris, based at Monkton Wyld, Bridport. They have recently furnished themselves with colourful tatter jackets made from scraps of fabric that we’ve supplied along with their own odds and ends. Indeed, Livingstones has it’s very own incognito Morris dancer working in one of the shops!
We regularly see the local Morris dancers in our shop getting ribbons, fabric and other habadashery supplies they need from us so we are all very excited about this event.
For more information on the folk festival please visit their website.

Livingstone Textiles in Bridport is very fortunate to be located next to the Jurassic coast, a world heritage site where some really amazing and idea changing fossils have been found. Bridport as a town likes to celebrate this love of its history and because of this every year Bridport has the Jurassic Fields Music Festival. This is a family friendly fun event over 2 days featuring music, comedy, food and many other entertainments. This might be something you quickly fancy going to, or you might have already planned coming along to the event. If so why not pop into see us Livingstone Textiles at the bottom of Waitrose car park, where we have a massive range of fabrics, from dress making to curtain making fabrics. We also have a range of haberdashery, dress patterns, cushions, and foam. You could even pick up a souvenir the form of fabric, we have a fabulous Dinosaur curtain weight fabric that could help you to remember the amazing time you have had at Bridport. This fun Dinosaur fabric is 140cm wide with a pattern repeat of 62.5cm and comes in at an amazing £12.50 per metre. It is a printed polycotton linen-look fabric with a beautiful design, this would be ideal in a boy’s or girl’s bedroom and would be suitable for curtains, blinds, cushions, and bedspreads. However, it would not be suitable for upholstery due to the lightness of the material. The natural looking polycotton linen colour background means that the material could work in most rooms with a range of different colour schemes, it could be made into the feature of the room or could equally blend in depending on the style of your room.
This polyester cotton blend background cloth comes in a range of other fun designs, from fried eggs, to farm yard animals and flamingos. If you would like a sample of this fabric or would like to know what else is in this fabric range why not contact us with your details and your question and we will be happy to help. Or if you’re passing either of our stores in Bridport or Yeovil why not pop in and ask one of our very helpful staff members.
