How to Make a Roman Blind – an evening sewing workshop in our fabulous fabric shop in Bridport, Dorset. Workshops run Thursday evenings from 7-9pm in the dressmaking room. Please note this is a skills and techniques class – you will not make a roman blind in this class, you will be constructing a sample. This class is not for beginners, you will need some sewing skill for this class.

Sewing workshop: How to Make a Roman Blind

Learn how to make a roman blind at one of our series of evening sewing workshops.  Book onto our evening sewing classes in the best fabric shop in Bridport, Dorset! Our sewing classes run on a Thursday evening. How to Make a Roman Blind is a short, focussed workshop designed to allow you to learn roman blind techniques on your very own machine. This is not a beginner's class - you will need some level of sewing knowledge for this workshop.

What you'll learn

This course covers everything you need to know to complete your roman blind at home. Please note you will be practising techniques for one method, and will not be making a roman blind on this course. You'll cover how to calculate fabric requirements, cutting out fabric, using roman blind tape and more. You'll learn skills that will help when you're sewing other furnishings too. This class is not for beginners, please take one of our other classes first! The courses run in our fabulously funky Aladdin's cave of a shop in Bridport, Dorset. Small class sizes (usually a maximum of 6) means you can sew in a comfortable, sociable group. This course can cover:
  • Calculating fabric requirements
  • Measuring and cutting fabric
  • Pattern placement
  • Using roman blind tape
  • Cutting and using rods
  • Child safety devices
  • Finishing your roman blind

What to bring to your class: How to Make a Roman Blind

You'll need to bring your own sewing machine to the workshop! We decided to do this because it means you'll learn to sew on the machine you'll be using at home, so you'll be totally confident that you (and your machine) can use your new skills for your next project. . Please check your sewing machine is functioning well in advance as we don't accept cancellations on these courses. You can book your sewing machine in for a service in advance if needed. You'll also need a basic sewing kit, which you'll also need to do your best sewing at home! Bring what you use at home, and remember we stock a huge range of sewing tools, both in our shop in Bridport and online. You'll need to bring the following sewing kit: In addition, you will need
  • half a metre of suitable fabric (curtain fabric or calico)
  • half a metre of curtain lining
  • 1 metre of roman blind tape
  • half a metre of sew on loop (fluffy) velcro
  • 2 child safety devices
  • 2 metres of blind cord
  • and thread which matches your show fabric.
We can supply these requirements for you using calico - please phone the shop to order your kit in advance as you will not be able to purchase on the night of the workshop. Refreshments are not provided due to time constraints, but feel free to bring your own flask.

Sewing class in Bridport

Our classes run in the dressmaking room of our fabulous fabric shop in Bridport, Dorset. Classes run in the evening after the shop has closed, so you can learn and sew in peace, but the shop is available for browsing (and buying!) before the classes start. Our teacher is the lovely Lynn Horniblow. Lynn is a highly experienced teacher and seamstress who trained on Saville Row and went on to teach and write courses in numerous colleges and summer schools. We chose her to teach our Bridport sewing classes  because she's incredibly knowledgeable, practical and patient, and we know you'll love her too!
