How to make covered piping using 4mm cord

Use this piping cord to make covered piping with the fabric of your choice. The fabric can be the same as your project to add a subtle finish, or alternatively use something quite different for a bold contrast! To make your own covered piping, cut lengths of your chosen fabric into strips on the diagonal. It seems like you're using a lot of fabric, but it's important because it allows the fabric to stretch on any curves. Use a zipper foot to stitch your piping to give the best results.

How to use no 8 piping cord for scatter cushions

Adding piping to cushions enhances the look by framing the cushion. Making home made piping with our 4mm piping cord can be made in an exciting contrasting colour or you can pick out one colour from a multi-colour fabric. Striped fabrics like this  cotton ticking stripe can make especially pleasing piping. If you don't want to make your own piping, how about trying our pre-made covered piping which we stock in a wide range of plain colours.

How to use piping cord for upholstery

Using piping on boxed cushions and upholstery will make it more hard wearing by protecting the edges and corners. For this it is best to make your own piping with at least a curtain weight fabric. 5mm piping cord preshrunk cotton is perfect for this use. Upholstery weight fabrics can be heavier and difficult to use for making piping unless you have a heavy duty sewing machine.
