Some of our makers have been busy recently producing these beautiful box cushions, designed and finished to customer requirements.
A box cushion has the top and bottom panels joined with a separate piece of fabric to create structured sides. These can be quite substantial, as for a sofa cushion, or slim, for something like a window seat. Box cushions can be finished piped or unpiped, depending on the look you want to go for.
We’ve recently made these luxurious piped velvet cushions, and also these hardwearing unpiped stripey cushions which are now giving a camper van a fresh new look. If you would like to reinvent any aspect of your soft furnishings – in your house, caravan, camper or cottage – ready for spring, then call in to one of our shops to be inspired by our huge stock of fabrics. We’re always happy to discuss your ideas and give a no-obligation quote.
Here’s a make we’ve been keeping under wraps because it was a Christmas present for my daughter. No mean feat making such a big thing without her knowing, thank goodness for school hours and our Livingstones workshop!
I am more of a sewer than an upholsterer, so when I fell in love with these colours of corduroy and how they looked together, I knew I would have to come up with an imaginative design to make use of them. I bought half a metre of each of the four colours, which was just under 20″, and this set the size of my footstool. I wanted my footstool about 15″ high so I cut a piece 18″ wide from each of the half metres, then I cut a triangle with the height half of the width, and a long piece about 6″ tall for my pocket.
I made the pockets quite fancy by folding in gussets and dividing them into 3, but a much simpler pocket would work as well.
To put it all together, first I hemmed the top edge of the pocket with a small hem. Then I turned in the other edges and folded my pockets. Next I pinned the pockets onto the sides, after deciding how to work the colour contrasts and where to position them. I sewed the edges and the seams in between the pockets first, making sure not to trap in the fabric from the gussets. Then I sewed along the bottom edge of the pocket to close it off.
Next I stitched together the 4 triangles to make the top, then attached on the sides to the top, making sure all my edges were properly square. Finally I sewed up the corner seams. All of this worked fine on my domestic machine, which I was really pleased about.
I also made up a small bean bag about 1.5″ deep to go inside the top, then I filled the rest of the inside with foam offcuts cut to size. I used a piece of harboard as the base and stapled my fabric to the board, checking my measurements and starting at the middle of each side. I also stapled on some blackcloth to make a neat base, then I left it at that. You could add feet or casters to make it easier to move the stool around. Now my daughter has a comfy footstool which can also double as an extra seat, and the pockets are handy for phones, chargers and remotes.
Here at Livingstone Textiles we sell bean bag filling, which are the little polystyrene beads that make bean bags….. bean bags.
To source more of these Tom and Meg went to visit the factory in Birmingham last week to collect some more stock and see where they come from and how they package them up, which is you’ve ever dealt with these tricky little beads you will know is a nightmare. When they were there, they found the most enormous bean bag ever along with huge polystyrene blocks, here are some picture of Meg stood next to these giant things to give you an idea of the scale.
We’ve all done a fair bit of sofa surfing over the Christmas period and you may not have been entirely happy with the comfort afforded you. Some of you may have even bought a new settee in time for Christmas but may discover that the bounce in your cushions isn’t really all that great.
Foam has a shelf life and although it will last many years, eventually it will start to deteriorate and crumble and you will need to think about replacement cushions.
Many manufacturers of synthetic sofa cushions now also use only a thick wadding in the covers. A sofa with foam inserts will not be bought at a discount sofa sale because they cost a lot more to produce. Your wadding cushions will seem fine for a few weeks but very quickly you will notice that they sag and squash into nothing because the polyester will not bounce back to its original shape. To rectify this we offer a bespoke service that will make your old or new settee bounce back in to life. We cut foam exactly to the size and shape of the cushion cover and then wrap it in thick wadding. In this way you get all of the bounce and shape retention from the foam with the addition of softness and comfort from the wadding. To finish up we wrap the whole squashy sandwich in stockinette for easing your cushions back into the covers – without a hot sweaty battle.
Is your foam still ok but your covers are looking a little tired? Pop in and talk to us about renewing your existing sofa, especially if it is an inherited or memorable piece. We offer a full and bespoke upholstery and re-cover service from our workshops in The Long Room at Livingstone Textiles,Bridport Dorset.
If you would like information on sofa cushions please contact us and we will be happy to give advise or a quote.
We know we’ve said this before, but don’t forget that if you’re passing the foot of our stairs that we have a huge basket full of foam offcuts that you can make use of.
Ideal for packing out a gap where a draught is bothering you, propping up a sagging cushion, for crafting projects, or just to use as a sponge to wash the car, there are different shapes out there every day. We just ask that you make a small donation to our charity box for the benefit of Harbour House in West Bay, so we can continue to support the residents’ activities.
Of course we also supply and cut foam to your specific requirements – bring us a template or your measurements, and we’ll do the rest, usually within the hour.
Reupholstery can transform your furniture, and we sell some gorgeous upholstery fabrics that will do the job, but there is much more to bringing new life to old furniture than just picking a delicious new fabric. We sell everything you could possibly need to complete a reupholstery job yourself, but if you’d rather hand the job over to the experts, then read on!
Hiding at the back of our Bridport shop is an upholstery workshop, a place where you can bring your furniture for the magic to happen. Our skilled upholsterers Laura and Di specialise in modern and older furniture respectively, so you can be sure that your work will be done by someone who really knows what they are doing.
Di recently completed this little chair, and as well as showing some of the finishing touches, these photos also show a little of the process:
The restrained grey of this simple-looking piece of furniture conceals (from the bottom) many layers of webbing, springs, hessian and coir, horsehair, wadding, calico and more wadding before it’s finally ready to have the show fabric carefully stiched and buttoned into place. The upholsterer’s work also includes repairing and restoring the wooden frame while it is fully stripped down, so your newly upholstered piece will continue to look good for years to come.
If you have a much-loved piece of furniture that you would like to see restored to it’s former glory or reborn in a fresh new way, come and talk to us. We can give you an initial no-obligation estimate and, of course, advise you on the huge range of fabric we carry on the roll and ready to order.
We cut sooooo many pieces of foam for our customers at Livingstone Textiles and we have a re-use or re-cycle policy where we every member of the team makes maximum effort to minimise waste. Part of our efforts to do this include recycling all of our packaging, both plastic wrappings and cardboard and also our foam.
When the foam is delivered to the shop it arrives in enormous sheets measuring over 2 metres square! This is manhandled up the 3 flights of stairs to our roof where it is carefully unrolled and laid out for use. We then cut your requirements from the sheets in a way that creates as little waste as possible. Obviously, you all want different sizes and shapes, from window seats to sofa cushions and dining chairs to campervan beds so we always generate odd pieces that we cannot make use of. These offcuts are saved up and the really small and hopeless pieces are returned to the foam company where they are chopped up into little pieces and used to make the coloured chip foam that we also supply, but we also have other pieces left over that can be quite a useful size and because reuse is even better than recycling, we pop all of these into a basket that we put outside our shop door every day that we are open. Folks can then come and choose what they need and make use of it when packing parcels for safe transit, stopping draughts and wedging into gaps in sofas or caravan beds for better comfort. We only request a donation that we collect for Harbour House in West Bay, for the benefit of the residents. Follow the link for more information on our foam and services we can offer you.
One of our customers has had our upholstery department transform this lovely junk shop chair using our delicious zebra pattern chenille fabric. We think the finish is just fantastic, and you can see how the upholsterer has centred the fabric carefully so the zebra pattern looks just right. This quirky low slung no-leg chair is now updated with an equally quirky fabric, giving a totally individual finish which will look amazing in the customer’s home.
Even better, a project like this will not take much fabric – a single metre of fabric is often enough depending on the pattern. If you are inspired to try a project like this yourself you can now purchase the fabric directly on our website by mail order, by clicking on the picture below.

This lovely old G-plan chair was given a quirky and stylish makeover by one of the fabulous upholsterers in the workshop attached to Livingstones.
The customer chose this richly-coloured upholstery fabric, which is a personal favourite of mine. It’s a playful geometric woven fabric in gorgeous colours that works equally well in a classic or modern setting, and will definitely stand the test of time.
While in the workshop this treasured piece of furniture was also repaired to stabilise the joints and the wood was polished to retore it to its full beauty.
If you’ve got a piece of furniture that you would like to see reupholstered and bought back to life by a skilled professional, then do come into the shop to discuss it. We’ve got a huge range of fabric to choose from, both to order and on the roll, and we’ll work with you to ensure you get exactly the look you want.

This astoundingly beautiful fabric has given all of the staff here at Livingstones a great deal of angst.
We all love its bright coloursand artistic style and are busy plotting ideas on how to use it to its full potential.
One of us wants a skirt and that would be a great priced piece of clothing at £16.40 as it would only need about half a metre.
Another really wants a sixties swing coat which would look so dramatic, luckily her mum is the talented Meg who owns Livingstones so hopefully she’ll get her wish…watch this space.
I think I’d quite like a pop of colour to go with a purchase from Dorset Arts Week so I might buy a piece for a cushion to give my living room a lift. What would you use it for? Come in to the shop and have a feel, it’s so unbelievably soft.
These fabrics are very hard wearing so are great for upholstery and yet they are still gorgeous as they come in vibrant and eye-catching colours. These fabrics will cheer up any room and give a totally new lease of life to that faded old chair in the corner!
Not only that, but these fabrics also make really wonderful heavy weight curtains, and there is lots of scope for co-ordinating fabrics in your room. For calculating requirements please see our guide to measuring for curtains.
If you have a loved piece of furniture that you would like to give a make-over then we are able to put you in touch with the right person for the job, our upholsters are able to refresh modern and traditional pieces. For more details please contact us.

We wanted to share with you two new wonderful collections of fabric we have to order from our Bridport and Yeovil shops. Part of the iLiv range, these collections provide some fantastic choices for curtains, blinds and upholstery. We also have a selection of designs and colours in stock at Bridport and Yeovil as part of our new autumn range.
This is a range based on a Botanical theme. It includes two different floral designs, Etched Vine and Sketchbook featuring off-white patterns on muted colour backgrounds, one of which also includes birds in flight within the design. These fabrics are suitable for general domestic upholstery, as is the other print, Parchment, which includes seed heads and foliage in a coloured print on a pale background. There is also a leaf themed embroidered fabric, Harper, which can be used for light domestic upholstery. Toning beautifully with the colours in the other fabrics is a check fabric, Shaker, which you could use for cushions, upholster a chair or make a heavier curtain. Finally in this collection, we have a large leaf woven design, Laurie, on a lovely heavy polyester, cotton and viscose mix fabric. This would look fantastic as a door curtain to keep out those pesky draughts, but is not suitable for upholstery. We have a selection of these fabrics in stock at our Bridport and Yeovil stores, and all of them are available to order by the metre. More pictures and details of the various colourways can be seen on the iLiv website.
This is a truly stunning collection which includes traditional floral designs, chenille fabrics and some crewel fabric, which is often very difficult to find. The chenille fabrics are Carnival with a herringbone design and Festival, a brightly coloured stripe. Both are suitable for general domestic upholstery as well as curtains and blinds, and would brighten up any room. Also suitable for upholstery is Byron, a woven check with a small pattern that is not overwhelming. This fabric also looks great on the reverse, where the pattern forms a stripe. The colours tone well with the other fabrics in the range. For prints the collection includes Chiswick, a leaf design and Heritage, a very traditional looking floral and bird design. Again these fabrics can also be used for upholstery. Finally the jewels of the collection are the crewel fabrics. We have Farleigh, a lovely leaf design on a cream background, and Couture which features circles, flowers and leaves on a cotton/linen blend coloured base cloth. These crewel fabrics are suitable for curtains, blinds and cushions but not upholstery. They would certainly add impact to any room. You can click here to view more details of the Highgrove collection.

Another beautiful job by one of our upholsterers – this beautiful sofa was completed last week by one of our talented upholsterers, completed in some of our beautiful fabric.
As can be seen in this closer image the work has been done to a lovely high standard, with beautifully tailored seams edged with piping.
The fabric really adds to the look of this finished piece – helping to add to the modern crisp look that it has now. If the customer had decided to go for a velvet or a more traditional fabric the final outcome would not be a modern look but a traditional one, which I believe would suit the sofa equally well but would look best in a traditional room setting. As it is though, the geometric design of the fabric helps to give the sofa a modern look, complementing the very angular cushions and arms.
The fabric is 140cm wide. This is a woven fabric which makes it reversible, meaning that both sides can be used, as can be seen in the image to the right. A great idea for this fabric would be to have cushions made on one side with the piping on the other, or curtains on one side with matching cushions with the alternative colour side showing. This could add a real twist to the room. Along side upholstery, cushions and curtains this fabric could also be used for blinds and lampshades. The colour is very natural means it would fit with most colours within a room, where the design could either be used to blend in or dressed up to stand out. This a beautiful versatile designed fabric, that would really add to most rooms.
If you would like a sample of this or any other fabric you have seen on our website please contact us and we will be happy to help.
Every wanted to add a bit of fun to your dining room chairs? Well, one of our customers has, by getting us to cover their dining chair seats with our fabulous fun multi coloured chess square fabric, and we think they look amazing.
This fabric has been so popular since we got it in stock, with people making curtains cushions and covering furniture. This fabric could suit most rooms with its wide range of colours within the pattern and its modern design. But even in a traditional room, this fabric could still look right, the rich colours of the reds and oranges would pick out those deep mahogany tones from the more traditional furniture pieces.
These chair seats were covered in house by one of our upholsterers, and as can be seen from the image to the left these have been covered beautifully, with high skill.
Livingstone Textiles does a wide range of upholstery from modern to traditional by our very skilled upholsterers. If you would like any further information regarding our upholstery services please contact us and we will be happy to help further.

Get into the Groove! Don’t you agree that these chairs look absolutely delicious? Our upholsterer has shown off her talents again with this stunning swivel lounge chair and ottoman.
These iconic chairs were designed by Charles Eames for Herman Millar and this model dates from around the 1980’s. Herman Millar was known for bold and beautiful designs and founded the company in 1923 in Michigan. These streamlined designs began to be favoured by wealthy clients who had previously favoured heavy, dark and wooden bedroom furniture. A self- taught furniture designer named Gilbert Rohde came along in the early thirties and used his knowledge of modernist and art deco styles to persuade Millar that modern, smaller homes needed a different approach. The Millar company survived the Great Depression by moving with the times and the striking iconic designs are recognisable the world over.
More information on Charles Eames can be found here
The fabric used on this chair was a limited stock line but we have many other furnishing weight materials to choose from in both of our shops and online
