Bridport normally runs a Green Fortnight at this time of year but 2020 brings us something different. This year sees the town hosting Bridport’s Fashion Revolution from the 13th of February onwards and here at Livingstone Textiles we are going to be sharing helpful tips to get you going with Green Fashion.
Fashion is a massive and a dirty industry but we can all change our habits and living in or near Bridport gives us a distinct advantage. This is because there have always been abundant independent businesses that we can choose to shop at. Most items of clothing are bought new and worn on average ten times before they are discarded but there is hope that if we choose to shop differently, we can all reduce the contributing factors to our warming planet.
New in for this Winter are a great range of Simplicity patterns in their gorgeous new season catalogue. With lots of cosy things to make and some great new fabrics in stock there’s plenty to get you inspired for the colder months ahead and we have some delicious new fabrics to make them with, ranging from new tartans, thick heavyweight drills and a new range of stunning silky dress fabrics suitable for fine blouses or delicate under garments. Pop in and have a browse through the books, we keep them in the quiet fancy dress room at the end of the shop and have a cosy heater next to the desk so you can have a look through the patterns in the warm. Don’t forget that we still have our New Look offer running where you can get a massive 40% discount off all the patterns in the book.
Just in, and getting lots of admiring glances from us! We have four fabulous colours of this gorgeous, lightly-textured new silk-velvet satin lining fabric, which can be used as an absolutely lovely lining fabric to give a gorgeous flash of colour and a soft touch to coats and jackets, or for any lining purposes. We also feel it would be perfect for a ‘I feel fantastic’ blouse to dress up, or to dress down with jeans, or for any garmment needing a fabric that drapes beautifully.
We’ve paired it here with a lovely New Look blouse pattern that we think would really suit this gorgeous fabric, but there’s plenty of other patterns to choose from in our catalogues. Don’t forget that all our New Look patterns are currently on sale at 40% off!
Silk-velvet satin fabric: 100% polyester, 112 cm wide, and only £6/per metre.
A huge discount 40% will apply to any New Look patterns you buy from Livingstone Textiles between Friday 15th November and Sun 16th December. There is no limit to how many patterns you can purchase nor how often and the whopping price reduction means that every pattern in the New Look pattern catalogue is now only £4.80!! We keep one of every pattern in the catalogue in stock and if we have already sold the dress pattern you wanted on the day you come in, we can order it in for you with free postage and packing too. Pop in to either of our stores and start shopping for a unique and handmade winter dress for the holidays.
Making toys as gifts is enormously satisfying and one of our staff recently got bitten by the bug with this fantastic dragon pattern by Simplicity – number 8715. We hope you like the results!
This pattern is designed to be made with lightweight minke fleece, but we wanted to use a delicious raspberry plush fabric we have in store to make it even more cuddly. This meant a few extra things we had to think about in the making up
The cutting layout. We had to think about what direction we wanted the nap to lie on every piece, which meant we couldn’t use the cutting layout in the pattern. (You have to be able to stroke your dragon just like a cat!)
Transferring markings. It was not easy to transfer markings from the pattern pieces as the plush fabric did not take markings well (probably also true with fleece). We ended up using tailors tacks to mark the position of the horns and eyes on the head.
Securing fabric for sewing. The plush fabric has a tendency to move around when you are sewing because of the pile. The seam allowances on this pattern were pretty small so this mattered more than ever. We solved this by choosing to tack every seam before sewing.
If you are thinking about making some toys yourself to give as gifts or just to have at home, we have lots of items here at Livingstone Textiles. The Simplicity catalogue has a whole section devoted to toys and accessories (patterns are kept in stock), and we also have a good range of books containing toys to sew, knit or crochet. We also stock the following:
Hollowfibre toy stuffing in 3 different sizes of bags
Pompoms and bells
Toy safety eyes in black and amber in various sizes
What is pattern hacking? If you make clothes at home, you’ve probably done this already; taking a dress pattern and adapting it by changing the length, or swopping the type of fabric, or even by mixing two patterns to produce a completely unique garment.
Simplicity are running a pattern hacking competition at the moment, based on nine of their current patterns, so get your creative head on for a chance to win a new sewing machine!
There’s a Simplicity Youtube video to give you some inspiration, or just let your imagination run wild – we’ve got all the fabrics and trims you need! The competition runs until 31 january 2020, so you’ve plenty of time to plan and make, but don’t forget that our Simplicity patterns (including the pattern hacking ones) are on sale right now.

Be part of the Slow Fashion movement and invest some time in making yourself something to wear this summer, the time and care you take in making your own garment will lead to an appreciation of the textiles that you use and the resources that goes into producing them for manufacture. You will be making something to fit your measurements so no more compromising on badly fitting garments either. By starting to create your own wardrobe you can contribute to reducing the waste and emissions caused by the Fast Fashion industry because after investing your time in sewing things to wear, you will make it to last and think twice before casting it aside. You will be doing your bit for the planet and your local town by spending money in an actual shop, not online! This promotes local employment whereas buying patterns online will not.
We also hold stock of all the current New Look patterns so you don’t have to wait or pay for postage either 🙂 We don’t even mind if you choose to upcycle an old garment or textiles with your new pattern instead of buying new fabric from us because we are passionate about sustainability at Livingstone Textiles and have been working to keep our carbon footprint as small as we possibly can for years. We are now stocking fabric made from waste fibres in the textile industry as well as recycled felt, and are actively demanding more choice from our suppliers. You will be able to read a lot more about our business ethic and green credentials very soon because we are compiling a whole new page dedicated to it on our website where you will be able to see all of the little and big things we are doing to help make a difference.
