You can also pick up a pair of these beautiful ornate scissors in antique gold finish for only £5, a perfect gift or stocking filler. We have limited stocks of these scissors so this offer is only available while stocks last.
So please pop in between 5th and 12th of October and please share with any friends who have not discovered us yet!
We wrote last week about the arrival of the new Simplicity pattern catalogue with some fantastic new autumn designs. Well now we have even more good news, as you can buy all the new (and old) patterns at 40% off until Saturday 19th October! What a great opportunity to stock up your pattern stash or find a new project for those rainy autumn days.
And we have also just had delivery of the New Look autumn catalogue and patterns, which are available at the regular great value price.
We keep the patterns in stock at both our Bridport and Yeovil fabric stores, and if someone has already snapped up the pattern you are after we can bring it over from the other shop or order it in for you.
We are constantly updating our webshop to include more and more of our stock, so there is a wide range of fabrics and more to choose from and always something new to look at.
The latest additions to our website are these two animal themed fabrics, the first is a lovely simple bumble bee furnishing fabric and the second is a viberant fabric with a stylised woodland theme. They would both be great for curtains, cushions, blinds, bags and more.
As we move into the autumn, maybe you would like to brush up on your sewing skills with a workshop in our dedicated teaching room at our Yeovil store? Our workshops are running on Saturdays through September, October and November. They run from 10am to 4pm , with tea and coffee included, though you will need to bring your own lunch. These classes all require you to bring your own sewing machine with all its feet and power lead, as well as a basic sewing kit. We have a car park right outside which is free to use while you are with us, and disabled access is available to the teaching room in our platform lift. All these full day workshops cost £45 payable on booking, which you can do in person at our Yeovil store or over the phone on 01935 422631.
Here is a reminder of the classes we are running this autumn:
Sew a Sample Curtain
This is a beginner’s class, though you will need to be familiar with your sewing machine and have basic sewing skills. You will learn how to hem a curtain and how to create curtain headings. You will make up a sample size example curtain – please note you are not able to make a full size curtain in this class due to space limitations. This class is running on Saturday 7th September 2019, so book now and gain the skills you need to upgrade your home decor this autumn.
Learn to Love Your Sewing Machine
Want to get more confident with your machine? Unsure even where to start? This class will help you gain in confidence on your own machine under expert guidance and will cover issues such as tension and stitch length, as well as the function of different feet. This class has been extremely popular and given a real boost to the participants’ sewing. This class is running on 21st September and 16th November 2019.
Learn to Machine Quilt
Machine quilting is the process of joining together layers of fabric, usually with a cushioned layer in between. This gives a decorated effect as well as adding texture to the finished item. This class is suitable for beginners, although you will need some familiarity with your machine and basic sewing skills. This class is running on 5th October 2019 and is almost sold out!
This class is a mystery, what delights will our wonderful teacher Lynn Horniblow come up with? All you need to know is that we will be having fun with a selection from our range of fabulous Christmas fabrics and making a home made decoration you couldn’t buy in the shops. Join us for this class on 2nd November 2019 and you will have time to go home and add to your stash of decorations before the tree goes up!
As the offer of free lining (terms & conditions apply) is ending soon (on 31st August 2019) we thought it would be interesting to learn a little more about the Bill Beaumont brand, which can trace its history back to Victorian times. Bill Beaumont joined the family textile business as when he played rugby in the 70s and 80s it was an amateur sport and even top players needed a day job. Bill bought the firm from the family in 1998, and ran the firm with his wife Hilary until handing over to their eldest son Daniel, who is the sixth generation at the helm. He still runs the company as part of the Al Guthmi textiles group.
What all that means for today is that Bill Beaumont offers a fabulous range of contemporary fabrics at really competitive prices. This month we have an extra selection of sample books for you to choose from and some fantastic fabrics on the shelves at discounted prices while stocks last. Just remember that the free lining offer ends on Saturday 31st August 2019, and is only available on Bill Beaumont fabrics purchased through our Yeovil store.
We don’t just do curtains and blinds here at Livingstone Textiles, we do an array of cushions. You can choose from zipped, piped, envelope, boxed cushions and chair pads as well. These kitchen chair pads were made with ties and stitched in the centre to create a buttoned effect through this very cool looking Ikat fabric. When you bring us an idea for a project you have been thinking about, our staff and makers will endeavour to create something to fit your requirements and take into account everything you explain to us before helping you decide on fabrics and colours. Pop in to either of our shops and speak to us. We’ll do our very best to help you realise the look that inspires you, all without expensive design consultation fees.
Elegantly gracing the drawing room of a modern home in West Dorset are these lined pencil pleat curtains made from the collection ‘Elspeth’ by Bill Beaumont. We currently have a large quantity of heavily discounted roll stock in Bill Beaumont designs at our Yeovil shop and throughout the month of August we are giving away free poly cotton lining with every curtain order placed until the 31st.
If you can’t find a suitable design on a roll we can offer a good selection of Bill Beaumont designs on our hangers and whilst these will not be as competitively priced, they will still qualify for free lining until our offer ends. You can upgrade too, just pick another lining such as Blackout,Thermal or Cotton and only pay the difference! We also offer a bespoke Lampshade making service so you can create a whole new integrated look for your room.
Follow Bill Beaumont on Pinterest for great ideas on where to use his fabrics
Bridport Hat Festival 2019 is fast approaching, and with that comes the inevitable pressure to create an astounding garb for your head. Well fear not, as out selection of ribbons, trims, feather and more is sure to offer something to anyone looking to spruce up their headwear.
This piece was brought in on Saturday by a customer, and they used our rainbow feathers (£6.45 /m – 60cm used) and rainbow cord (40p /m) to add some colour and life to this vintage top hat!
We have a huge range of different fabrics and accessories you can add to any headpiece to help prepare you for a Saturday of crazy hat-ness.
There’s a very special promotion currently running at Livingstone textiles, just in our Yeovil store! We have a whole range of Bill Beamont fabrics ordered in specially. They are ready to buy off the roll, and at a very special discounted roll price which we are passing on to you!
With their gorgeous quality and timeless designs, choosing from our range of Bill Beaumont fabrics for your curtains, blinds and upholstery will bring contemporary style to transform your home.
As an extra bonus for our lovely customers, we’re also offering free curtain lining in August for all curtains made from Bill Beaumont fabric. You can buy this off the roll or order from a hanger, and ask us to make them up, or make them yourself. As usual, this is for polycotton lining, or you can choose ourcotton lining and just pay the difference.

The rolling machine is the piece of equipment we use to measure rolls of fabric, we also use it to split down large rolls into smaller more manageable sized rolls for our shelves.
Like our building and a few other things at Livingstone Textiles Bridport our rolling machine has some character brought from age and is sturdy old school model!
How does it work ?
We load the roll we want to measure onto the bottom pole of the machine and weave it in and out of the other poles until we reach the top. At the top we have another new cardboard tube waiting (we say new but we reuse all of our tubes where possible so a recycled tube would be more accurate) the fabric is then held in place with some masking tape. Once we are all set the machine is turned on and is operated with a foot pedal just like your sewing machine would be, this controls the speed
We watch the dial that counts the metres tick round until we get the amount of fabric we need and then we cut across the fabric giving us 2 rolls. This is great for measuring large amounts of fabric and is a much faster and neater way of doing it than measuring it on one of our tables (even though they are huge).
The machine in action
Above we are splitting a large roll of cotton calico and in the warmth of this lovely June day the smell coming from the roll is of lovely fresh and raw cotton, yummy!
We know Christmas seems like a long way away and that the sun has only just about come out of hiding, so feels way too early to be thinking about Christmas! But we all know how fast it creeps up each year, so we are getting ready early and giving you a chance to get organised and grab a bargain.
Throughout July we are offering 10% off all Christmas fabrics including Christmas fat quarters. So why not take some of the pressure off at Christmas time. Buying early helps spread the cost and the workload through the year a bit. We have a wide range of festive fabrics and lots of ideas for lovely things to make and you’ll have plenty of time to make them.
This offer applies in both our Bridport and in our Yeovil shops so pop in and have a look.
Later this year 2019 we will again be running sewing workshops in our Yeovil shop, for those of you who would like to improve your sewing skills and learn something new.
The workshops will be run by the lovely Lynn Horniblow. You will need to bring along your own machine, giving you a chance to become more familiar with it and allowing you to focus on the sewing rather than learning all about a new machine. Each class is £45, this is non-refundable so please make sure that you are able to bring a working machine and that you are able to attend on the date of the class. There are limited places so please book soon to ensure you have a place.
Tea and coffee will be provided; however, you will need to bring along your own lunch.

As you may remember this month (June 2019) we have a special promotion on our Search Press craft books at Livingstone Textiles in Bridport and Yeovil. These high quality craft books are always popular and make fantastic gifts. And all this month they are an absolute steal at 20% off!
You can see from the picture above one of the latest titles which has just arrived in our store, and is by the wonderful author Debbie Shore. This book is an addition to the Sew.. range of books which includes other titles such as Sew Brilliant Bags, Sew Bunting and Sew Baby. In this book you can find a range of projects including cushions, tablecloths, barbecue accessories and even a child’s play teepee! There are rustic table accessories, stencilled bunting and a bean bag stool. All of these projects have us just itching to get stitching, now all we need is the weather to co-operate!
Debbie Shore is one of Search Press’s most popular authors and has put together other ranges for the company. One of these is the Half Yard range. Of course here in the UK we buy in metres, but it is amazing the projects you can complete with only half a metre of fabric. You may have a few half metres hidden away in your stash that could be put to use straight away.
The newest series from Debbie Shore is her Sewing Room Secrets, starting with this title all about Machine Sewing. Learn tips and tricks from the expert with projects to practice on.
Other titles in this series coming in the future will include Quilting and Dressmaking & Alterations. We will certainly be keeping a lookout for those. Meanwhile why not pop into store to pick up one of our current titles with 20% off!
Livingstone Textiles is happy to be joining in with local businesses in Bridport and in other towns in the UK for the first national Fiver Fest.
Fiver Fest is the brainchild of Totally Locally, a grassroots movement promoting local sustainability. It’s being organised in Bridport by the good people at Waste Not Want Not who’ve now got many other local businesses in Bridport involved too, including us! This is the first year that it is being run nationally and the idea behind it is, if every adult spent just £5 a week in local businesses instead of in supermarkets or online, this would equate to £13.5 Billion pounds anually going back into the UK economy, helping all of us and our communities. In Bridport this would equate to £4.6 million pounds going back into our local community.
For Fiver Fest week, to encourage people to shop locally, small businesses across the UK are putting on some fabulous deals for you to buy for just a fiver; here at Livingstone Textiles Bridport we have these gorgeous sewing scissors (we all love them!) available in a rainbow metal finish or matt brass at the special Fiver Fest price.
Fiver Fest is only on from the 8th to the 15th June 2019 so get involved – lets look after our community and keep our money local.
In Livingstone Textiles Yeovil we are offering a free pattern of your choice
when you purchase £10 or more of King Cole Yarn.
This offer will be running throughout June 2019 in our Yeovil shop. Offer applies to any purchase of full price King Cole yarns over £10. With lots of great colours to choose from its a great opportunity to grab a free pattern to go along with your new yarns. Why not come in and see what we have to offer!
Today is the last day that you can buy New Look patterns at 40% off. The offer is valid on all of the designs in the newly launched summer catalogue which features some great new outfit ideas.
Be part of the Slow Fashion movement and invest some time in making yourself something to wear this summer, the time and care you take in making your own garment will lead to an appreciation of the textiles that you use and the resources that goes into producing them for manufacture. You will be making something to fit your measurements so no more compromising on badly fitting garments either. By starting to create your own wardrobe you can contribute to reducing the waste and emissions caused by the Fast Fashion industry because after investing your time in sewing things to wear, you will make it to last and think twice before casting it aside. You will be doing your bit for the planet and your local town by spending money in an actual shop, not online! This promotes local employment whereas buying patterns online will not.
We also hold stock of all the current New Look patterns so you don’t have to wait or pay for postage either 🙂 We don’t even mind if you choose to upcycle an old garment or textiles with your new pattern instead of buying new fabric from us because we are passionate about sustainability at Livingstone Textiles and have been working to keep our carbon footprint as small as we possibly can for years. We are now stocking fabric made from waste fibres in the textile industry as well as recycled felt, and are actively demanding more choice from our suppliers. You will be able to read a lot more about our business ethic and green credentials very soon because we are compiling a whole new page dedicated to it on our website where you will be able to see all of the little and big things we are doing to help make a difference.

It’s no secret that we recommend lining your curtains! Linings give protection from the sun, add body to your curtains, and just give a nicer finish all around. So why not take advantage of our offer of free polycotton lining with your curtains or curtain fabric this May? If you want a superior lining, no problem. Simply choose the best lining for you and your room (we know a lot of people favour a blackout lining) and all you will pay is the difference in price.

We stock sun-resistant cotton linings in 3 colours, blackout lining which is particularly useful at this time of the year with early morning, and thermal lining. Coloured linings can be ordered from our sample book.
We have a full bespoke curtain making service at both our stores, using local seamstresses who make and hand finish your curtains to your own measurements so they fit your windows exactly.
