The rolling machine is the piece of equipment we use to measure rolls of fabric, we also use it to split down large rolls into smaller more manageable sized rolls for our shelves.
Like our building and a few other things at Livingstone Textiles Bridport our rolling machine has some character brought from age and is sturdy old school model!
How does it work ?
We load the roll we want to measure onto the bottom pole of the machine and weave it in and out of the other poles until we reach the top. At the top we have another new cardboard tube waiting (we say new but we reuse all of our tubes where possible so a recycled tube would be more accurate) the fabric is then held in place with some masking tape. Once we are all set the machine is turned on and is operated with a foot pedal just like your sewing machine would be, this controls the speed
We watch the dial that counts the metres tick round until we get the amount of fabric we need and then we cut across the fabric giving us 2 rolls. This is great for measuring large amounts of fabric and is a much faster and neater way of doing it than measuring it on one of our tables (even though they are huge).
The machine in action
Above we are splitting a large roll of cotton calico and in the warmth of this lovely June day the smell coming from the roll is of lovely fresh and raw cotton, yummy!
We know Christmas seems like a long way away and that the sun has only just about come out of hiding, so feels way too early to be thinking about Christmas! But we all know how fast it creeps up each year, so we are getting ready early and giving you a chance to get organised and grab a bargain.
Throughout July we are offering 10% off all Christmas fabrics including Christmas fat quarters. So why not take some of the pressure off at Christmas time. Buying early helps spread the cost and the workload through the year a bit. We have a wide range of festive fabrics and lots of ideas for lovely things to make and you’ll have plenty of time to make them.
This offer applies in both our Bridport and in our Yeovil shops so pop in and have a look.
Later this year 2019 we will again be running sewing workshops in our Yeovil shop, for those of you who would like to improve your sewing skills and learn something new.
The workshops will be run by the lovely Lynn Horniblow. You will need to bring along your own machine, giving you a chance to become more familiar with it and allowing you to focus on the sewing rather than learning all about a new machine. Each class is £45, this is non-refundable so please make sure that you are able to bring a working machine and that you are able to attend on the date of the class. There are limited places so please book soon to ensure you have a place.
Tea and coffee will be provided; however, you will need to bring along your own lunch.

As you may remember this month (June 2019) we have a special promotion on our Search Press craft books at Livingstone Textiles in Bridport and Yeovil. These high quality craft books are always popular and make fantastic gifts. And all this month they are an absolute steal at 20% off!
You can see from the picture above one of the latest titles which has just arrived in our store, and is by the wonderful author Debbie Shore. This book is an addition to the Sew.. range of books which includes other titles such as Sew Brilliant Bags, Sew Bunting and Sew Baby. In this book you can find a range of projects including cushions, tablecloths, barbecue accessories and even a child’s play teepee! There are rustic table accessories, stencilled bunting and a bean bag stool. All of these projects have us just itching to get stitching, now all we need is the weather to co-operate!
Debbie Shore is one of Search Press’s most popular authors and has put together other ranges for the company. One of these is the Half Yard range. Of course here in the UK we buy in metres, but it is amazing the projects you can complete with only half a metre of fabric. You may have a few half metres hidden away in your stash that could be put to use straight away.
The newest series from Debbie Shore is her Sewing Room Secrets, starting with this title all about Machine Sewing. Learn tips and tricks from the expert with projects to practice on.
Other titles in this series coming in the future will include Quilting and Dressmaking & Alterations. We will certainly be keeping a lookout for those. Meanwhile why not pop into store to pick up one of our current titles with 20% off!
Livingstone Textiles is happy to be joining in with local businesses in Bridport and in other towns in the UK for the first national Fiver Fest.
Fiver Fest is the brainchild of Totally Locally, a grassroots movement promoting local sustainability. It’s being organised in Bridport by the good people at Waste Not Want Not who’ve now got many other local businesses in Bridport involved too, including us! This is the first year that it is being run nationally and the idea behind it is, if every adult spent just £5 a week in local businesses instead of in supermarkets or online, this would equate to £13.5 Billion pounds anually going back into the UK economy, helping all of us and our communities. In Bridport this would equate to £4.6 million pounds going back into our local community.
For Fiver Fest week, to encourage people to shop locally, small businesses across the UK are putting on some fabulous deals for you to buy for just a fiver; here at Livingstone Textiles Bridport we have these gorgeous sewing scissors (we all love them!) available in a rainbow metal finish or matt brass at the special Fiver Fest price.
Fiver Fest is only on from the 8th to the 15th June 2019 so get involved – lets look after our community and keep our money local.
In Livingstone Textiles Yeovil we are offering a free pattern of your choice
when you purchase £10 or more of King Cole Yarn.
This offer will be running throughout June 2019 in our Yeovil shop. Offer applies to any purchase of full price King Cole yarns over £10. With lots of great colours to choose from its a great opportunity to grab a free pattern to go along with your new yarns. Why not come in and see what we have to offer!
Today is the last day that you can buy New Look patterns at 40% off. The offer is valid on all of the designs in the newly launched summer catalogue which features some great new outfit ideas.
Be part of the Slow Fashion movement and invest some time in making yourself something to wear this summer, the time and care you take in making your own garment will lead to an appreciation of the textiles that you use and the resources that goes into producing them for manufacture. You will be making something to fit your measurements so no more compromising on badly fitting garments either. By starting to create your own wardrobe you can contribute to reducing the waste and emissions caused by the Fast Fashion industry because after investing your time in sewing things to wear, you will make it to last and think twice before casting it aside. You will be doing your bit for the planet and your local town by spending money in an actual shop, not online! This promotes local employment whereas buying patterns online will not.
We also hold stock of all the current New Look patterns so you don’t have to wait or pay for postage either 🙂 We don’t even mind if you choose to upcycle an old garment or textiles with your new pattern instead of buying new fabric from us because we are passionate about sustainability at Livingstone Textiles and have been working to keep our carbon footprint as small as we possibly can for years. We are now stocking fabric made from waste fibres in the textile industry as well as recycled felt, and are actively demanding more choice from our suppliers. You will be able to read a lot more about our business ethic and green credentials very soon because we are compiling a whole new page dedicated to it on our website where you will be able to see all of the little and big things we are doing to help make a difference.

It’s the last two days of our great May offer, we’re still giving away free poly cotton lining in every pair of curtains orderd in May and if you want to upgrade your lining to a blackout or a cotton lining you only have to pay the price differential.
It’s no secret that we recommend lining your curtains! Linings give protection from the sun, add body to your curtains, and just give a nicer finish all around. So why not take advantage of our offer of free polycotton lining with your curtains or curtain fabric this May? If you want a superior lining, no problem. Simply choose the best lining for you and your room (we know a lot of people favour a blackout lining) and all you will pay is the difference in price.
Our free curtain lining offer is now half way through, but it’s not too late. You can still browse our extensive choice of fabrics from roll stock and sample hangers, choose whether to make the curtains yourself or have our experienced makers hand finish them to your specification, and get a no-obligation quote so you can see how reasonable our rates are for a superb quality finish. Just choose your fabric, take your measurements and request a quote before the 31st May. All quotes given during May will be honoured for one week after the end of the offer.
If you would like to choose a different curtain lining, don’t worry, the price of the polycotton lining will be deducted from your order and you will only pay the price differential. We stock sun-resistant cotton linings in 3 colours, blackout lining which is particularly useful at this time of the year with early morning, and thermal lining. Coloured linings can be ordered from our sample book.
We have a full bespoke curtain making service at both our stores, using local seamstresses who make and hand finish your curtains to your own measurements so they fit your windows exactly. For local clients a measure can be arranged, or see our simple guide to how to measure your own windows. We can supply a no-obligation quote, please contact us or call into our stores for details. The length of time from placing your order to receiving your curtains varies according to demand, but is usually around 4 weeks.

Here at Livingstone Textiles we sell bean bag filling, which are the little polystyrene beads that make bean bags….. bean bags.
To source more of these Tom and Meg went to visit the factory in Birmingham last week to collect some more stock and see where they come from and how they package them up, which is you’ve ever dealt with these tricky little beads you will know is a nightmare. When they were there, they found the most enormous bean bag ever along with huge polystyrene blocks, here are some picture of Meg stood next to these giant things to give you an idea of the scale.
Bridport Arts Centre is all ready to kick off its Fashion Week event to celebrate fashion history, costume and the recent upsurge in the popularity of sewing. Starting on Monday 4th March and running through to Sunday 10th March there is sure to be something to whet your appetite and inspire you to get your sewing machine out. Livingstone Textiles is very proud to have been able to sponsor this event and during the week we will have a stand in the Arts Centre foyer where you can pick up information about our locations and the products and services we provide as well as a huge selection of fabric and haberdashery to choose from.
The events consist of talks on pattern drafting, pattern reading, historical fashion and the influences of modern London fashion through the experienced eye of Saville Row tailor, author and tv presenter James Sherwood. Also visiting Bridport to talk about the Royal Wardrobe are the Curators of Bath Museum of Fashion. They will be explaining their current exhibition on modern royal fashion as well as the royal wardrobe of Queen Alexander, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and our current Queen Elizabeth. Continuing the fashion history theme, Bridport museum will be giving a unique insight into their textile and costume collection dating back 150 years and Arts Centre Director Curtis Fulcher will be giving an informed talk on Tudors and Historical costume. Curtis is an experienced costume designer and maker and has made a couple of recreations to demonstrate his talk with questions. There are also a great range of films to watch about some of the greatest fashion designers that have ever lived and you can find more information about the whole weeks events here
We have an exquisite array of new trims now in stock at Livingstone Textiles that we picked up on our recent visit to the Stitches show in Birmingham.
Imported from India, they have an exotic feel about them and combine sumptuous velvets twisted with metallic threads to create a trim that can also be seperated out top use as individual motifs.
One of our favourites is the embroidered 3″ wide trim seen here in the top of the picture. It has a distinctly Eastern European folk feel to it and would look authentic adorning any dance or national costume. You can see more Boho trims that we have available here.
Please message us through the website if you would like samples of any of our trims, we have a vast range in stock.
Some of the Livingstone Textiles staff had an exciting day out as we headed up to Birmingham at the weekend to look at all the new products being launched this year.

The yarn we will be stocking comes in an array of beautiful colours and has a nice handle, being made from acrylic it will wash really well and its light twist means that is strong but still really soft and plump.
We’ve also chosen a range of excellent books with a very distinct ‘Bridport feel’ about them so here is a sneak preview.
We’ll be announcing the stock arrival on Facebook so watch this space…………………………
We are so excited to share our new range of bag accessories with you.
