We are proud to be part of the Heritage of Bridport in our Historic listed rope making building, indeed we still have the long rooms at the back of our shop where machinery was bolted to the floor and the ropes were laid out and, the aunt of one of Livingstone’s staff earned her living making rope here many years ago.
As you can see from these before and after shots, huge improvements have made the Bridport shop a lot more visible than it was even 10 years ago. If you go to our website, you will discover an even older picture of the shop and a bit more history, not surprising as we have now been an established business in Bridport for over 45 years!
As part of Bridport’s Heritage, we are participating in the Ropewalks Fair by entering into the themed shop window dressing competition and have combined traditional nets and some of the rope that we sell with some of our fabulous new seaside fabrics.
We have featured some gorgeous boat fabric in the window along with a brightly coloured fish cushion and a lobster pot. We also have tonnes more fabrics inside the shop as well so come on up the stairs and see what you can discover in this lovely old building.
Hints of the Summer are available to order from this rather lovely new Paradiso hanger we have in the shop. Featuring ferns, embroidered pomegranates and gentle butterflies, the fabrics hint at the gentle summer days not far ahead of us.

The velvet is also wide enough to make into curtains for a more minimalist look. Exclusively available in our Bridport shop.
Combining stripes with a pattern is always a good thing but its not alwasy an easy thing. We have a smart hanger that does the thinking for you and its put together in colour blocks so the only thing you have to do is match it to your colour scheme.
One of our customers has bought a brand new house in Axminster and has a new grey suite of furniture. She has lime green cushions to cheer it up but wanted something bright but smart at the windows. We helped her to select from this hanger and she chose the pink combination to be made up into Roman Blinds for a large bay window.
The main fabric is called amulet and it is all embroidered onto a linen look cotton. The lattice is worked in long grey stitches and the circles are heavily embroidered in a pink spiral. Edging the embroidered fabric with pink the woven stripe borders makes the blind look smart and picks out the pink embroidery. The maker lined the blinds in stone lining and used the stab stitch method to hold the materials together. This method can be used when embroidery might make it hard to achieve very straight stitching on the show cloth.

“The Strawberry Thief” is a classic William Morris design and was one of his most popular and most repeated design. Originally this design was intended for furnishings and drapes but now is popular as dress material too.
Our fabric features a bird taking strawberrys from a strawberry patch. It is a dress weight and could be used for really light curtains but not for furnishings.
This a beautiful bright print, showing the design wonderfully, it is ideal for dressmaking and crafts as the cotton is so soft.
This is available to buy in Bridport Dorset. If you would like a sample of this or any other fabric you have seen on here please contact us with your details and information on the fabric you require and we will be happy to help.
Complementary colours within soft furnishings can be a really good way of balancing a room. Having very decorative or busy curtains can be balanced by adding a plain trim to the curtain (see here for an example) or by adding plain cushions to the room. It is important to pick a colour that is in the design or possibly in the room.
If you are thinking of coordinating colours within your soft furnishings one good way of ensuring the colour match is to look at fabric collections. Generally, within a fabric collection, there will be a range of plain colours that work with the patterned design.
This collection from Chess Fabrics shows how to do this very well. The collection is called “Country Garden” and have a section of plain fabrics and patterns that will complement each other. As can be seen from the images they have added plain cushions in the room setting that have the beautiful floral curtains, in doing this the cushions on the bed do not fight or detract from the curtains, ensuring the room is balanced.
With this room setting plain piping has been sewn around the floral cushions framing them making them look finished. They have also added some plain cushions behind which picks up the colour within the floral design. These cushions do not distract from the florals only adds to them. Using different floral patterns is also ok so long as they are the same colour ways and do not fight with each other.
This collection is available to purchase from Livingstone Textiles Bridport Dorset, where if you visit you will be able to see our full range of hangers and roll stock. If you would like more information on services we offer or fabrics we sell please contact us and we will be happy to help.
