This lovely little book has found its way home with more than one of our staff members this winter. Part of the 20 To Make series, it features a range of knitted hats for both men and women. One of our team found it an ideal way to use up a ball of chunky wool which was left over after knitting letters on some ‘Weasley’ christmas sweaters.
The result was this delightful cable edged beanie hat, we just love the gold colour and it’s very up to date. This hat was knitted with the cable band being completed first, then you pick up stitches along the edge of the band to knit the rest of the hat in double and single moss stitch. Less than a day to complete because of the chunky wool and large needles.
Other hats in the book include a ribbed pompom hat, a lacy beret and even a santa hat. With a few fair isle designs included this book is a great way to use up those odd ends of wool in your stash. The yarn weights vary from 4 ply all the way up to chunky. All the explanations and abbreviations are included along with stitch patterns for all the designs.
We have a lovely offer for you at our Yeovil store this December – simply spend £10 on knitting yarn and pick up a free knitting pattern from our extensive range. You could choose one of the patterns for this fantastic glittery tinsel yarn to knit something fun for Christmas, or bag yourself a new project to indulge in over the Christmas break. There’s probably even (just) time to knit a sweater for Christmas (I am currently knitting a Harry Potter Weasley sweater as well as the Christmas knitalong). This will really keep the cost down for your project, and if that’s not enough we have some bargain yarn in store at the moment while stocks last – first come first served. Just remember you need to spend £10 to get your free pattern and the offer ends on 31st December. Check out our opening times over Christmas on the side of this post. We will look forward to seeing you in Yeovil!
We couldn’t resist this darling santa toy snoozing away on his grassy bed so we’re jumping in on the King Cole Sleepy Santa Wreath Knit Along. Knitted in Tinsel and Glitz sparkly yarns, the Father Christmas is knitted with separate clothes so can be dressed and undressed. We have all the yarn you need at Livingstone Textiles Yeovil (can be brought down to our Bridport shop for collection) as well as toy stuffing, all you will need to add is some (optional) googly eyes and a polystyrene wreath base. All the instructions and requirements are in the free knitalong pattern you can download here and it’s now complete so there’s nothing to hold you back! You could also treat yourself to a pair of these lovely Knitpro needles, made of birchwood and so kind to the hands!

Livingstone Textiles in Yeovil holds a wide range of King Cole yarns, and we wanted to give you a taste of what is available in our ranges. Today we are featuring King Cole Drifter, which is a range of self-patterning yarns ranging from 4-ply to Aran weight. All these knitting yarns are sold as 100g balls. These Drifter yarns are held in stock at Livingstone Textiles Yeovil store.
Because of the patterning of the yarn, Drifter Baby is specifically for the baby patterns, as you can see on the dress above it knits up into the perfect pattern on the baby sized clothes. The other Drifter yarns are patterned for adult clothes and will not knit up right on a baby pattern.
Drifter 4-ply is a lovely yarn for the summer months leading into autumn when the nights get chillier but you don’t want a winter weight yarn. These yarns are mostly acrylic which gives softness with added wool and cotton for a superior handle. There is a range of patterns for all these yarns and any colours we do not have in stock can be ordered in so long as you are taking at least 6 balls of wool. You can browse the patterns online at the King Cole website.
In Livingstone Textiles Yeovil we are offering a free pattern of your choice
when you purchase £10 or more of King Cole Yarn.
This offer will be running throughout June 2019 in our Yeovil shop. Offer applies to any purchase of full price King Cole yarns over £10. With lots of great colours to choose from its a great opportunity to grab a free pattern to go along with your new yarns. Why not come in and see what we have to offer!
Some of the Livingstone Textiles staff had an exciting day out as we headed up to Birmingham at the weekend to look at all the new products being launched this year.
There are some superb new fabrics available from our Reps and we’ve chosen some bright and exciting designs to stock in the shop in the coming months.
We also have a very exciting announcement to make…………..
Many of you already know that we sell a great range of wool and knitting patterns plus all of the accessories at our Yeovil shop and its all proved to be very popular with our customers. We do frequently get asked for it in our Bridport shop as well and so we have listened to you and decided to stock some gorgeous knitting and crochet yarns in our Bridport shop now too!
The yarn we will be stocking comes in an array of beautiful colours and has a nice handle, being made from acrylic it will wash really well and its light twist means that is strong but still really soft and plump.
We’ve also chosen a range of excellent books with a very distinct ‘Bridport feel’ about them so here is a sneak preview.
We’ll be announcing the stock arrival on Facebook so watch this space…………………………
This lovely Easter bunny is really easy to make. We made ours by simply knitting a square with super chunky yarn, available from our Yeovil store, in garter stitch. Our square was made by casting on 30 stitches but you can make yours any size you like. You will want to vary the weight of the yarn if you are making a smaller bunny. Alternatively if you are not a knitter, why not try using the same principle with fabric? How about a hessian bunny for instance? (You can see at the end of the post how this turned out.)
Simply knit in garter stitch until your piece is square (you can check by folding into a triangle as shown) then cast off. Now you are going to create your rabbit shape. Find the middle of the top of your knitting and fold over both corners as shown. this shows where your stitching needs to go.
Leaving a tail, sew a running stitch along the lines shown in black in the picture, using one length of wool.
Pull on both ends of the wool to form the ears and the head. Your bunny will look a bit sad at this stage, so put some toy stuffing into the head to give a good shape and sew it closed at the back.
Next sew the back together down to the bottom edge. Fill the body with toy stuffing, then use a running stitch around the bottom edge and pull up to gather the base closed. Fasten off and sew in any loose ends.
Now use some black wool to embroider eyes and a nose, then give him a ribbon around his neck. Lastly make a pompom for his tail, or use one of our large white pompoms, sew this on and your rabbit is ready for Easter.
Here’s how our hessian experiment turned out, let us know if you tried anything else!

What are the different types of Yarn or Knitting wool and what does it mean?
You may hear the term “ply” used when talking about knitting wool or yarn, and ply is the weight of the yarn or thickness. It really means strands of thinner yarn have been twisted together to produce that thicker yarn. So for example, 4 ply is where 4 strands of thinner wool have been twisted together to create a thicker or stronger piece. Another term that might be heard is double knit or DK. This is just another way to classify the weight of the wool, double knit is heavier than 4 ply, which again is heavier than 2 ply. Aran wool is another weight of knitting yarn and wool, it is sometimes known as 10 ply and is a great weight for garments like thick winter jumpers and accessories. It’s traditional to knit elaborate cables and knots into aran garments that add extra warmth and different areas of the UK all have their own unique designs. This important aspect of our British heritage also served a practical purpose as when a Fisherman was found drowned at sea, they could identify his home fishing village by the patterns knitted into his sweater and return him to his loved ones. Many patterns were spread down from the North by the women who would sit knitting on the quay waiting for the catch to come in. They would migrate down the East coast with the pilchard fishing and share their regional shapes and patterns with each other before helping land and gut the catch.
