Miss Haversham is looking rather spectacular in her Burns attire. Draping a couple of metres of tartan as a shash will add elegance and authenticity to any evening dress you are sporting for the occasion.
Miss Havershams outfit is inspired by Simplicity pattern number 8285.
We also love pattern 2172 and this video shows you how to make this magnificent coat. There is also a fabulous skirt that can be worn with it. Follow the link for more information on making these patterns. We stock the whole range of Simplicity patterns at our shops and you can select some stunning damasks and velvets from our soft furnishing cloths. We have an entire room dedicated to fancy dress fabrics, ranging from dreamy two tone organzas to bi stretch copper lurex so you can create a totally individual look. Burns Night is annualy celebrated in Scotland on the 25th of January and celebrates the works of the great poet Robert Burns. It is also now frequently observed in other parts of the United Kingdom by native Scots and those who appreciate the heritage of Scotland. Robert Burns was born on January 25th 1759 which is why Burns night is celebrated on this day. He died in 1796 and his best known work is probably “Auld Lang Syne” which is traditionally sung at midnight on New Years Eve or Hogmanny. He is known in Scotland as “The Bard”
Many families and friends enjoy getting together on Burns Night to share a supper of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties with Whisky as the preferred tipple. You can find out more about Haggis here. During the evening poetry written by Robert Burns is recited, sometimes Scottish songs are sung and then the Haggis is traditionally ‘piped in’ by a Bagpipe player in full Scottish dress where it is toasted on arrival at the table. At Burns night events many men choose to wear kilts and women might wear a shawl, skirt, sash or dress made from their family tartan. A tartan is a cloth made of wool woven in a distinctive check pattern using different colours across the warp and the weft and clans have their own distinct patterns that have been replicated over centuries, often nowadays in more modern blends of viscose and polyester as well as in wool.
If you are attending a Burns Night event you can choose from the range of bright new tartans at Livingstone Textiles to create a sash or shawl over your evening attire, we don’t have much online but their are lots to choose from in house. We also stock some colourful tartan ribbons to dress your hair or add interest to a plain dress, pop in to either of our shops to browse our collections. We also think that it’s a great idea to host a kids Burns Night event where you can get them involved with the reading of poetry and maybe using a recorder to pipe in a haggis that they’ve helped to prepare. They could make a Scottish flag to hang up or could colour in place settings using some of the words in the poems of Burns. H A P P Y H A L L O W E E N !
Get yourself along to Livingstone Textiles this half term and bring the kids too. We’ve dozens of delicious sparkle, stars and spooky stuff to drape yourself in and for decorating the house. Whether its shiny holographic stretchy stuff or gossamer net with metallic rainbow cobwebs (and it’s reversible too!), we’ve got lots to choose from and starting at only £3.50 per metre you can afford to make some great costumes this Halloween.
Halloween has become a much-celebrated festival in the UK, with children and adults joining in the fun, dressing up and throwing fright nights and parties to celebrate.
Here at Livingstones we have some brilliant Halloween fabrics in stock that can be used for dressing up outfits and decorating.
Some of them are double sided, giving you a silver cobweb on one side of the black mesh fabric and a vibrant rainbow effect cobweb on the reverse. This makes it ideal for party bunting as the effect can be seen from both sides without having to go to all the trouble of making and sewing two lots of traingles or squares together. Simply cut out the shapes and pin them to a dark cotton tape. This can then be whizzed under the sewing machine in record time to make a really effective decoration for your celebrations. Try mixing in our sheer sparkly stars too for an even better effect!
Time to get planning for the ultimate Halloween costume.
We’ve got some brilliant fabrics in stock for you to create an eye-catching outfit. Pumpkin orange cotton, shiny black material with silver cobwebs, black netting with rainbow spiders webs and netting with sparkling stars all over it to dress your room or front windows.
We’ve also got black ravens feathers, black lace, sequins and elastic to trim with.
Pop into Livingstone Textiles and explore our range of material and trimmings and see where your imagination takes you or choose from our huge catalogue of patterns if you’re not sure where to start
Don’t forget that you can still get 25 % off your patterns for a little while longer, with the offer ending on Tuesday 2nd October.
It’s the perfect opportunity to try out a new style for the autumn and maybe even go for the new pocket trend in skirts. We have the new autumn release of patterns so it’s the perfect time to treat yourself to the latest patterns.
We love our show dummy’s new look, created by one of our talented colleagues here at Livingstone Textiles. She is wearing a kimono made out of one of our oriental fabrics. This fabric has a beautiful pattern of cranes and luxurious gold highlights. It is 100% cotton, 110cm wide and priced at £17.90 per metre. We don’t have much of this specific fabric left (although it may be able to be reordered) so have not listed it on our new website shop. However you can see a selection of our other oriental fabrics below, and you can browse the full oriental cotton collection here.
Livingstone Textiles started out in the vibrant town of Bridport and has been a big part of the town for over 46 years. The thing about Bridport is that there’s always something going on and last year a small group of enthusiastic folk lovers put on Bridports very first Folk Festival. It was a great success so with a little change to the date (so as not to clash with Dartmoor Folk Festival) they decided to do it all over again and put it on the week before Sidmouth Folk Festival.
Launching on Friday with bands throughout the day at Bucky Doo, the festival got off to a flying start and received a warm Bridport welcome. Evening entertainment continued across many supporting pubs in the town hosting folk bands and musicians while at The Electric Palace the festival was opened in accapella song and celtic pipes from The Coves before Richard Digence and support took the stage. Then followed a weekend of frenzied Morris Dancing, lots more stage music, cream teas at Millenium Green and hasty re-scheduling before the rain came down.
Many of the Morris Dancers got to dance outside the Red Brick Cafe and on their way round to St Michaels Trading Estate they came past our front door. Consequently we had a steady flow of keen sewing ladies – and men, all eager to add colour to their outfits with our lace, ribbons, buttons and trims as well as find supplies and inspiration for their own sewing projects. We don’t list our haberdashery in our online shop but are really happy to send samples and items by post that you might need. Contact us for further information.

Perfect for a shirt, a dress, or a skirt, these are just some of the delightful dress-weight seaside themed prints you’ll find in our shops, so sail by and have a browse!
We have acquired some very beautiful fabric. ” But you’re always doing that” I hear you say. True enough and our fabric stash is pretty vast, so big that it now takes up two whole shops! The thing is, sometimes a little stash comes along that we just cannot do without and we just have to squeeze it in somewhere.
This month we are bringing you something unique. One offs.
And there they are. Absolutely beautiful hand block printed cottons from India.
Representing the individual nature of handmade, each is a short run of 6 or 8 metres or so and created with Indigo and Rust dyes.
These really are very special and as such we are not selling them in anything smaller than 2 metre pieces. Each run has been individually inspected by us to ensure clean line up of the block print with no overlaps.
Don’t hang about because the best designs will be flying out quickly and once they’re gone they’re gone.
With summer around the corner and the hint of sunshine teasing us with its warmth, it’s that time of year for light cotton or even linen clothes to help keep cool and looking summery.
We have a lovely range of 100% cottons in many, many designs from plains to florals or batiks to animals and more. We even have Liberty designs and cotton lawns, so there is plenty to choose from when you’re thinking of adding something to your summer wardrobe.
If linen is more your fabric of choice for the fair weather then we have plenty for you as well, with a colourful range of plain pure irish linens to choose from.
Alternatively, we have a range of linen mixed fabrics, some are cotton and linen unions and others are linen viscose mixed fabrics which are in fact underrated and overlooked by many of the purists who see that there is a viscose content to the fabric and run! However, viscose is a man-made fibre that is manufactured from a plant-based material called cellulose and is typically made from woody plants, such as trees and bamboo. It is a low-cost fabric and has many of the desirable qualities of more luxurious fabrics. It is used to make clothing because it is breathable, drapes well, is highly absorbent and does not trap body heat. Because viscose is made from renewable plants, it is frequently cited as an environmentally friendly fabric, particularly when bamboo is its source. So maybe give linen viscose a chance next time and you’ll be surprised at how cool and comfortable it is!
Spring has sprung and to celebrate, we’re sharing some charming cotton prints with you.
Perfect little designs that are ideal for dressmaking, craft projects and patchwork, these are just a few selected from the huge delivery we’ve had this month. The grape is delightful. A combination of deep pink and petrol blue, it shimmers and changes as it moves under the light. If you can’t get in to see us over the easter Break, remember we can always send out samples in the post and you can order by telephone on 01308456844.

At Livingstone Textiles Bridport we are extremely fortunate to live amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in the British Isles. As well as fast becoming a very popular holiday and tourism destination with its crumbling Jurrasic coastline, the West Dorset landscape is increasingly seen in documentaries, television series’ and as an area in which to make evocative films.
For many of us nothing beats a good traditional costume drama and in the newest screen version of the Dorset Author Thomas Hardys’ beautiful novel, Far From The Madding Crowd, the stunning countryside around Bridport is portrayed with all of its rural charm. While the filming was taking place from various locations around the town and surrounding villages, one film crew pitched camp behind Livingstones and we frequently supplied ribbons, haberdashery, elastic, buttons and various pieces of cloth to the costume department who would regularly pop in to top up their own supplies.
Inspired? Why not host a unique Regency Ball Party? West Dorset has a wealth of beautiful village halls for hire at ridiculously cheap rates and there is a beautiful Regency inspired venue at The Bull Hotel in the town complete with its own Ballroom. Local Folk Bands can perform live music for you at really competitive rates and most can arrange a local caller to teach very simple Playford Dance. For a birthday or wedding, this could be a beautifully immersive experience and at Livingstones we can supply you with authentically styled patterns to sew your own gowns as well as an array of luxury patterns and plains for waistcoats, dress shirts, petticoats and bonnets. Remeber to ask us about joining our pattern club as well to get free patterns and great price offers unavailable online.
With Valentine’s day coming up fast, why not treat yourself to a book full of ideas for some lovely heart-themed projects and quick makes? these projects will also be good for craft fairs, Christmas, or just for making life more pretty all the year round!
For the smaller makes, choose from our huge range of fabrics on the roll, or browse through our fat quarters to get a smaller piece of something lovely. To finish it off, indulge yourself by choosing some pretty things from our selection of ribbons and buttons – you’re bound to find something you like!
With so many clothes now being made out of stretch fabrics, a stretch interlining is the perfect way to get a great finish and still maintain the little bit of ‘give’ in the fabric. We carry a huge range of patterns, by New Look, and by Simplicity – which are currently on offer with 50% off – with many designed for stretch fabrics, including our stretch demins and drills, like these jeans by Mimi G:
We now stock a medium-weight bi-elastic interfacing by Prym, in 200 x 90 cm pieces, which is perfect for all your stretch fabric projects. The interlining is fusible and can be bonded to even delicate fabrics using a low-temperature iron. The white interlining is 100% polyester, and is machine washable (as long as your chosen fabric is!) at 30 degrees.
