With the multiple threats to our environment from pollution and consumerism, the need to reuse and recycle has never been greater. There are many ways to recycle plastic bottles and other plastic waste, but luckily for us, transforming it into usable yarn for weaving fabrics is one of the most efficient ones! Of course, we also demand that fabric produced in this way is beautiful and useful too, which is why we’ve chosen to stock this lovely new fabric woven from fibres cleverly created from 100% recycled plastic waste, keeping it out of our oceans for a much more useful life as furnishings in our homes. It’s strong, good to handle and in modern, neutral tones. This fabric comes in a useful double width of 280cms/108 inches wide, and has a pleasing textured and flecked finish.
We had to make a door curtain to cover a rear door that was situated at the bottom of a staircase and creating a cold draught in the main living room of this home. A number of fabrics had been mixed by the customer to create a comfortable country living look so we had to find a fabric that didn’t fight with the rest of the colour scheme. After careful consideration of fabric books and several swatches the customer settled on this fabic by Isles. The Dove grey colour really softens that corner of the room while complimenting the colour scheme of blues and being made of wool it has thermal qualities that keep the room warmer. The customer also decided on a thermal lining to eliminate any cold air passing through the cloth and this has made it look very thick and luxurious whilst doing exactly the job intended. Isles Harris can be purchased from Livingstone Textiles and we can send out samples of any colour in the series.
When you think of roller blinds they are mostly plain and pretty boring or the patterns that are available aren’t quite right for what you want. Although we don’t make roller blinds we are do stock roller blind backing which is an iron-on fabric that you apply to the back of your chosen lovely fabric, transforming it from standard floppy fabric into stiffened fabric ready for your roller blind cassette! Unfortunately we don’t stock the roller blind cassettes, so you will need to source one for this (they can easily be found online).
Here is our step by step guide to applying the roller blind backing:
Tools you will need:
Show fabric for your blind
Roller blind backing fabric
Large clean surface that you can iron onto
Set square (to ensure corners are right angles)
Step 1: How much fabric?
For the show fabric you will need, for the width, the exact width of the finished blind plus an additional 2cm (1″) and for the length you will need the length of the finished blind plus 30cm (12″). For the roller blind backing you will need to allow and additional 2cm (1″) across the width and again an additional 30cm (12″) to the finished length.
Place your roller blind backing down on a flat, clean surface (needs to be suitable to iron onto later) and measure out the required size of your blind plus the additional measurements above, drawing this onto the roller blind backing. Use your set square to make sure your corners are at 90 degrees otherwise your finished blind will look wonky! Now cut out the shape you have just drawn, from the backing.
Position the now cut backing onto your fabric piece (note you have not cut the show fabric at all yet). The fabric should be facing down (wrong side up) and the backing should be glue side down (this is the slightly shiny side). When positioning the backing on the fabric you should consider the pattern placement (if applicable) try to get the pattern central and check that the top /bottom of the blind will work well with the pattern.
Now your fabric and backing are all lined up you can begin ironing. Set your iron to as hot as the fabric will take and begin ironing from the centre of the blind backing working outwards in circles ensuring you go right up to the edges. You will need to press and hold the iron down firmly and apply steam. To ensure that all of the backing has stuck down properly look at the fabric from a low angle to show up any bubbles that may still be there. If this is the case then use the iron to push these bubbles out to the edge of the fabric so that the air can be released at the edge ( think of it like applying a screen protector to a smart phone in this sense).
Now you are able to cut the show fabric and the backing down to the correct size that you want the finished blind to be at the edges, these should be well stuck down because of the extra 1cm either side that was allowed. You will still need to leave the allowed 30cm (12″) at the top as this will be the part that will sit inside of the cassette to secure the blind. You may also want to attach a weighted bar to the bottom of the blind (this should come in the kit) so the 30cm (12″) should allow for this.
Your fabric is now ready to be fitted to the cassette!

One of the staff from Livingstone Textiles in Bridport saw a hare in a field on the Dorset Coast Road this morning. It was very still but its brown colour and long ears stood out against the drab green of the field and it was just quietly watching. We like to have that morning chat when we all come in to work while we go about opening up and making a brew and it got us to thinking about some of the really special faabrics we’ve had in over the past couple of years. Being a shop in a rural town we notice that our customers seem to like hares as much as we do so we thought we’d share a couple of really special fabrics that we’ve had in recently.
All of these are still available in our shops and we also have a couple available to order from our website.
Whether you’re just starting out on your sewing journey, have just moved to the Bridport area and are hunting down new soft furnishings or need some advice on a current project we are looking forward to seeing old and new faces in 2019. Our normal shop opening hours are now resumed: Mon-Sat 9-5. Closed Sundays.
This beautiful new fabric from one of our regular suppliers is a celebration of autumn depicting leaves and berries in vibrant jewel colours. Made up into a pair of Roman blinds they will compliment our client’s dining room windows and tell a story of the seasons swinging from an English summer into autumn.
This cotton fabric in the featured Rust colourway can be purchased in our shops for only £20.90 per metre, or see below to order online. We also offer a full make up service with our skilled seamstresses.
We’ve not had this new range in for long but it’s already proved incredibly popular. We’ve made up a lot of orders for our customers and it’s continues to be a popular choice for scatter cushions. Our latest order was for this pair of curtains using two widths in each curtain so they’ll be lovely and full. We don’t advise anything less than double fullness so you achieve a more luxurious window dressing and you can find out more about calculating your fabric requirements here. Of course, if you’re not confident with that then any of our trained staff are on hand to help you either in person, over the phone or via email.
We’ve used the Camille range in this project and the colourway is Pervenche. The designs are evocative of watercolours by the Impressionists and have a softness to the printing that mimics a real painting. This is all achieved with the digital printing process and we’ll be telling you more about that in the future. A wider range of designs, colours and fabric uses are shown below.
Long, dark evenings call for cosy curtains, and these beauties that one of our talented makers recently finished for customer certainly fit the bill! The stylish woven fabric is deliciously heavyweight and hangs beautifully, adding warmth to your room without feeling oppressive. We have this fabric and others in the same range, including a fabulous circles design, which we all like very much.
Pop in and have a look at the range, pick up some samples, or order some curtains of your own! This fabric is also suitable (and fabulous) for cushions and sturdy enough to use for upholstery.
It’s always fun to unpack a box at Livingstones, especially when it’s full of beautiful new fabric hangers to put on display for our lovely customers! All of these beauties arrived recently, so remember to take a look at the fabric on hangers and in books next time you’re thinking about furnishing fabrics – there’s a world of choice, and you can borrow your favourites to take home and mull over for a tiny £10 deposit, which is given back when you return the hangers. We can always make up curtains and roman blinds to your specification so you get the exact result you need for a perfect finish to your room.
We have some new fabrics on our shelves this autumn we would like to share with you. This delightful flower and fruit themed jacquard woven fabric feels autumnal to me, as all the locally grown apples appear in our local farm shops. This fabric is absolutely stunning with its red tones on a light cream background and is equally suitable for curtains and upholstery, so you could even match in your furniture. You can buy this fabric online or request a sample using the link below, or see it on the roll at our Bridport store.
Two new additions to our popular ‘pop art linen look’ range are this stag fabric and pheasant design fabric. These have a small all-over print with different designs. The pheasant fabric can be joined across widths when making curtains, but the stag fabric has been cut down from a wider fabric and does not join so is only suitable for curtains up to one width in size. These fabrics are also suitable for craft projects and we are sure you could make some lovely presents from them.
Another animal fabric is heading to the farmyard with delightful stylised farm animals and birds. These are large designs printed in rows across the fabric, and the large size of the print lends itself to use for applique. You could cut out individual animals and put one on the middle of a cushion or bag, which would be a really economical use of the fabric. Of course, if your preference is for curtains (maybe for a country kitchen?) we are happy to make curtains to fit your individual windows. You can also browse our full range of animal fabrics.
We’ve just taken delivery of this beautiful new design on a half panama cotton. It has a very slight slub in the weave that adds to its texture and the background while looking grey in these pictures actually is a pink tone. Please click here for a sample of this fabric for true clarity. We have lots of complimentary styles and colours in stock at Livingstone Textiles to help you bring some sunshine indoors for the next season.

Ticking was originally made from a tightly woven cotton or linen that was used as a feather proof fabric to cover bedding such as pillows and mattresses and was a more practical utilitarian cloth, it is known to be mainly neutral with a distinctive muted coloured stripe design, usually brown, blue, grey or sometimes red or yellow.
However, this fabric has been included in many modern design ideas and is also now used for a wide range of things including cushion covers, curtains, curtain lining, upholstery and can be used to give decorative touches in interior design and many other things. Some tickings have a wider width, making them useful for items where you don’t want a join, such as bed covers or tablecloths. The classic ticking design now comes in many more colours and can be found in a range of weights allowing its uses to be almost endless but still giving that classic simple look that is very effective.
Look at this wonderful idea of using ticking to line a pair of shepherd hut curtains, with gorgeous Scandi design fabric click here to have a look!
We have a wide range of ticking here at Livingstones in many different colours with the classic stripe and a few others that are slightly different variations on the classic look but still give the feel of ticking to a room or any project.

As the nights draw in, we are all thinking about how to get cosy for the winter. These tartan and wool fabrics are one way to achieve this (another is with clever choice of lining for your curtains).
When we pulled the samples off the shelf to put together, we were amazed to see what a lovely selection is available. The fabrics vary from 100% wool Harris Tweed fabric to lighter weight and less expensive polyester wool touch fabrics. The companies who offer these timeless fabrics and modern colourways include Abraham Moon, Chess Fabrics, Chatham Glyn Fabrics, Marton Mills and Prestigious Textiles.
Many of these fabrics are also suitable for upholstery, this is noted on the hangers or in our supplier catalogues, so please ask if you cannot find the details.
Curtains made with interlining or ‘bump’ are much fuller and more luxurious than those made with just lining alone.
The bump literally ‘bumps up’ the fabric making it thicker and has the added quality of providing a layer of insulation against cold windows.
Interlined curtains are an especially popular choice in a house with older windows and those with listed building status but are also used in more modern homes where an appearance of luxury is required.
The window size must be taken into account when considering interlining because they can easily swamp a room with too much volume. The fullness of the finished curtain also has to be taken into account but don’t worry because all of the staff working across Livingstone Textiles are trained to advise you in the appropriate way. Find out more here.
When we make your interlined curtains we use a more involved method of making where the interlining is first locked into place with Herringbone stitch under the side turns of the fabric and along the seams of any joins.
A picked hem is then worked through both the interlining and into the show fabric where a tiny line of equally spaced stitches will be barely visible.
Finally, the pencil pleat heading tape is sewn into position making the curtains look really plump and luxurious.
You can buy this elegant grey bird fabric in our shops and throughout September you will receive free curtain lining* with any curtain or blind order.

Down here in the Westcountry there is a fast growing trend for Shepherds Huts as a place of retreat and sanctuary.
Folks with a little bit of land or a large enough garden are choosing them as an option to rent as holiday accomodation too, cosying them up with little wood burners and simple living essentials .
At Livingstone Textiles we have furnished some unusual dwellings with our cloth, most memorably a tree house in a secluded valley not far from our front door. This week we’ve been working on a shepherds hut where a simplistic approach was requested.
Our client opted for a scandinavian inspired design of lollipop trees on a white background and an unusual lining. Choosing a ticking stripe for the reverse means that the little hut will look just as lovely from the outside as from the in and we think the effect is beautifully rustic.
