We’ve taken deliveries of some exciting new cotton fabrics in both of our Yeovil and Bridport fabric shop and we’ve chosen both large and small designs suitable for garment making, crafts and patchwork. The quality and crispness of the material is delightful and would feel cool around your ankles as a long and full skirt, or why not have a go at the pattern tutorial below? One of our staff is making this dress and has chosen to line the bodice in another cotton because it’s so soft next to the skin. We’ll show you pictures of her dress as soon as it’s finished but meanwhile. take a look at this easy to follow example from Simplicity. They have many video tutorials on youtube that help in understanding some of the tricky reminology of a written dress pattern.
Every year at Livingstones we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to share a little bit of our business workings with a work experience student from a local school.
This year we had the lovely May, from Woodroffe and she was a quick learner, embracing all of the tasks we presented her with. She had some fresh and interesting ideas and will definitely be one to watch in the fashion industry over the coming years. In the meantime we’d like to share a couple of the outfits she created for our manequins, entirely from our remnants baskets.
The rolling machine is the piece of equipment we use to measure rolls of fabric, we also use it to split down large rolls into smaller more manageable sized rolls for our shelves.
Like our building and a few other things at Livingstone Textiles Bridport our rolling machine has some character brought from age and is sturdy old school model!
How does it work ?
We load the roll we want to measure onto the bottom pole of the machine and weave it in and out of the other poles until we reach the top. At the top we have another new cardboard tube waiting (we say new but we reuse all of our tubes where possible so a recycled tube would be more accurate) the fabric is then held in place with some masking tape. Once we are all set the machine is turned on and is operated with a foot pedal just like your sewing machine would be, this controls the speed
We watch the dial that counts the metres tick round until we get the amount of fabric we need and then we cut across the fabric giving us 2 rolls. This is great for measuring large amounts of fabric and is a much faster and neater way of doing it than measuring it on one of our tables (even though they are huge).
The machine in action
Above we are splitting a large roll of cotton calico and in the warmth of this lovely June day the smell coming from the roll is of lovely fresh and raw cotton, yummy!

Be part of the Slow Fashion movement and invest some time in making yourself something to wear this summer, the time and care you take in making your own garment will lead to an appreciation of the textiles that you use and the resources that goes into producing them for manufacture. You will be making something to fit your measurements so no more compromising on badly fitting garments either. By starting to create your own wardrobe you can contribute to reducing the waste and emissions caused by the Fast Fashion industry because after investing your time in sewing things to wear, you will make it to last and think twice before casting it aside. You will be doing your bit for the planet and your local town by spending money in an actual shop, not online! This promotes local employment whereas buying patterns online will not.
We also hold stock of all the current New Look patterns so you don’t have to wait or pay for postage either 🙂 We don’t even mind if you choose to upcycle an old garment or textiles with your new pattern instead of buying new fabric from us because we are passionate about sustainability at Livingstone Textiles and have been working to keep our carbon footprint as small as we possibly can for years. We are now stocking fabric made from waste fibres in the textile industry as well as recycled felt, and are actively demanding more choice from our suppliers. You will be able to read a lot more about our business ethic and green credentials very soon because we are compiling a whole new page dedicated to it on our website where you will be able to see all of the little and big things we are doing to help make a difference.
It’s the last two days of our great May offer, we’re still giving away free poly cotton lining in every pair of curtains orderd in May and if you want to upgrade your lining to a blackout or a cotton lining you only have to pay the price differential.

We love seeing and hearing all about our customers makes and so it’s always nice to be sent in pictures of what you have all been up to with the fabrics bought from us.
The latest picture we have been sent is from the very talented Linda who has used our crane fabric to reupholster her arm chair and it looks amazing! The fabric works really well with the piece of furniture and the before and after photo really shows how great the transformation is. She has managed to get the fabric tight around the chair and so the finished look is very effective, also the pattern matching on the cover buttons shows a great eye for detail so well-done Linda!
We sell upholstery supplies here at Livingstone Textiles along with loads of great fabrics so there is plenty to choose from if you have been inspired by Linda’s great work. The crane fabric is available on our website and in our Bridport shop, to buy it online or just find out more click here.
If you have made something recently with our fabrics and would like to share it with us then we would love to see it, you can send your pictures to us by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Calico is a very basic cotton cloth which gets its distinctive speckled and natural look from the way it is made; as it is made from partly processed and unbleached cotton fibres, the fabric usually contains flecks of the cotton seeds which get woven in. The natural fibres are what gives the fabric its versatility allowing it to be used for just about anything. It is durable, cheap and can be easily dyed, painted or printed on.
Because of the way calico is made, it is cheap and versatile. Calico is made with a plain weave; this means that the warp and weft are equal (the up to down and left to right weave of the fibres are woven equally). It can therefore be easily and quickly made on mechanised looms as it is now, and also on non-mechanised looms as it was made back in the 11th century in India.
There are also different weights/ grades of calico available which can lend themselves to different uses. Calico is great to use for toiles to practice your pattern on an inexpensive fabric before setting off with your chosen and generally more expensive ones. It is also great for bags, aprons and cushions, and can be painted on and dyed just about any colour you can think of! It is also used in traditional upholstery as a lining. It can be used for just about any clothing, accessories or household furnishing and so is one of the most versatile fabrics available.
Calico is normally sold as a loomstate fabric, which means it has not been bleached or treated after weaving. Because of this it is liable to shrinkage and should always be washed before being used to make up an item that is likely to be washed in the future.
A little history
The history of calico is very long and can be traced back as far as the 11th century. Calico originated in Calicut in southwestern India and this is where its name is derived from (Calicut). At this time India was the biggest producer and exporter of cloth in the world and this was mainly because of how cheap and easy the calico was to make and also for traders to buy.
We have a range of different weights of calico available to buy at both our Bridport and Yeovil shops or click here to follow the link to our website where you can order these.
We have some rather cool cotton chambray in stock at both our Bridport and Yeovil stores and we think they’ll look really fabulous made into a bag or a denim style jacket.
The cloth is lightweight and has a little stretch in it so would also look great as a jeans style skirt or trousers and you can now buy all three designs from our online shop by clicking on the links below the videos, but first have a look at how they sparkle!
It’s no secret that we recommend lining your curtains! Linings give protection from the sun, add body to your curtains, and just give a nicer finish all around. So why not take advantage of our offer of free polycotton lining with your curtains or curtain fabric this May? If you want a superior lining, no problem. Simply choose the best lining for you and your room (we know a lot of people favour a blackout lining) and all you will pay is the difference in price.
Our free curtain lining offer is now half way through, but it’s not too late. You can still browse our extensive choice of fabrics from roll stock and sample hangers, choose whether to make the curtains yourself or have our experienced makers hand finish them to your specification, and get a no-obligation quote so you can see how reasonable our rates are for a superb quality finish. Just choose your fabric, take your measurements and request a quote before the 31st May. All quotes given during May will be honoured for one week after the end of the offer.
New in as part of our spring and summer range, we have these lovely double gauze fabrics. Made out of 100% cotton, they have the crinkled cheesecloth look, but the double layer gives more body and means they are not so see-through. We think these fabrics would be lovely as a floaty scarf, or a boho top (hint: we have a pattern sale on during May 2019!). They are also suitable for baby uses – you could make a baby wrap-style carrier or just a more robust baby muslin. At the Bridport fabric shop we have these fabrics in pink and grey, and at our Yeovil fabric shop you can choose from pink and blue. Whichever colour you choose, we think you will love these high quality gauze fabrics.
We’ve been talking for many months about re-designing our bottom room to make it safer for everyone as a retail space. This has historically been our delivery area but we also have some rolls of cloth stored on shelving that our customers enjoy having a look at. We were sad to see another long established business go in Bridport this year with the closure of ‘This & That’ however the legacy lives on because we now have some of their shelving in our delivery area!
We’ve used the shelving to divide the room off and create a new shop display area with a great new space for us to work in behind it. We had to relocate one or two things as anyone does when they’re having a shift around so we dismantled our old Coats thread stand. We’ve been selling off all the old Coats stock at massively reduced prices as we’ve gone over to selling Gutterman threads instead so don’t forget to look at the colours we still have left in stock when you’re next passing, you can top up your thread stocks really cheaply because they are now reduced to 50p per reel for the small size and £1 a reel for the large!!
We took the opportunity to have a bit of a play last week and created a colourful fish from old cotton reels and we’ve hung him in the stairwell next to some of our gorgeous new woven tapestry fabrics that are available in these new wave designs and don’t forget that you get FREE LINING with curtains ordered throughout May. We will be developing this theme over the coming weeks to create a summer carnival feel to the entrance that we hope you enjoy it as much as we do creating it.
Welcome to the Wild Wild West, home of the fastest drawn scissors at dawn.

Here you can see that this vintage design of Cowboys and Indians has been made into a waterproof bag or shopping, books or school/college stuff. It’s been lined with one of our bright and cheerful childrens fabrics featuring orange dinosaurs and has strong canvas straps stitched firmly between the layers. The whole bag is robust and we think the design has a vintage vibe cool enough for both adults and kids. The fabric is 130cm wide and costs £8.50 per metre and can be bought at either of our shops in Yeovil or Bridport.
We’ve just taken delivery of two great new quilted fabrics in navy and coffee colours to go with our super shiny silver quilted material.
The navy colourway is available in a traditional diamond quilt pattern as is the silver and the coffee colour is a little bit different because it has a quilted flower pattern. All three are great for projects like a gillet which having no sleeves is quite quick to make up and the fabric can also be made into a funky picnic rug or an anorak if you fancy a more involved project.
The navy and the coffee designs are available in a 148cm width and cost £7.50 per metre and the silver quilted is 110cm wide and costs £9.80 per metre. They are not yet available on our webshop but you can purchase by mail order over the phone or pop in to one of our shops at either Yeovil or Bridport. Clicke here for our contact details.
