Dreamy two tone Organzas

We have them back!  The glorious two tone organzas that flew out of the shop last year are back and we’re so delighted to have more colours to offer you.  The blue/green colourway is one of the favourites and we expect this to sell really fast but while you’re in the shop, check out the others as well.

The grape is delightful.  A combination of deep pink and petrol blue, it shimmers and changes as it moves under the light.  If you can’t get in to see us over the easter Break, remember we can always send out samples in the post and you can order by telephone on 01308456844, email or online at

Far From The Madding Crowd

At Livingstone Textiles Bridport we are extremely fortunate to live amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in the British Isles.  As well as fast becoming a very popular  holiday and tourism destination with its crumbling Jurrasic coastline, the West Dorset landscape is increasingly seen in documentaries, television series’ and as an area in which to make evocative films.

For many of us nothing beats a good traditional costume drama and in the newest screen version of the Dorset Author Thomas Hardys’ beautiful novel, Far From The Madding Crowd, the stunning countryside around Bridport is portrayed with all of its rural charm.   While the filming was taking place from various locations around the town and surrounding villages, one film crew pitched camp behind Livingstones and we frequently supplied ribbons, haberdashery, elastic, buttons and various pieces of cloth to the costume department who would regularly pop in to top up their own supplies.

Inspired?  Why not host a unique Regency Ball Party?  West Dorset has a wealth of beautiful village halls for hire at ridiculously cheap rates and there is a beautiful Regency inspired venue at The Bull Hotel in the town complete with its own Ballroom.  Local Folk Bands can perform live music for you at really competitive rates and most can arrange a local caller to teach very simple Playford Dance.   For a birthday or wedding, this could be a beautifully immersive experience and at Livingstones we can supply you with authentically styled patterns to sew your own gowns as well as an array of luxury patterns and plains for waistcoats, dress shirts, petticoats and bonnets.  Remeber to ask us about joining our pattern club as well to get free patterns and great price offers unavailable online.

Happy Halloween Fabric Fiends

Lots of you have been in this week to buy shimmery, sparkly, witchy fabrics for costumes not only for your little ones but for yourselves as well.  Don’t forget to take extra care with shop bought costumes as many man made fabrics are highly flammable.

If you are at all concerned, it’s not too late to pop in to the Bridport Shop and buy our Flame Retardent Spray, suitable for home application, it makes these synthetic fibres a lot safer when the instructions are followed correctly and we’ll issue you with a fire certificate as well.  It’s also a legal requirement for any fabrics in public buildings to be flame retardent treated, including curtains, stage sets and costumes.  Worth bearing in mind if you’re currently rehearsing for panto season.  We’ve seen evidence of a lot of pumpkin carving going on as we’ve travelled to and from Livingstone Textiles from across West Dorset.  Have a great time tonight and stay safe, whatever your plans.

Bridport Hat Festival

Underwater hatIt’s that time of year again when Bridport goes a bit crazy for hats.

This is the 8th Hat Festival and promises to be another exciting event in the town featuring handmade hats, obsure hats, posh hats, caps, boaters and bonnets.

You can try your hand at millinery by attending one of the courses in the town or you can get yourself involved with the children and make your own wacky hats and fascinators.  A couple of years ago, Megan made this incredible aquarium hat out of net and fabrics from Livingstone Textiles and assembled them on an upside down lampshade.

2011_mass_hat1 Bridport is absolutely buzzing on Hat Festival day as hundreds of people turn out in their creations and parade the streets .  We have a wide range of fabrics that can be used to make a hat, cap or bonnet from scratch.  You could try making a sparkly creation from sequin fabrics and embellishing with shiny ribbons and trims or how about something in glamourous velvet to mark the occasion, trimmed in stunning black ravens feathers that we are now selling as a trim.  Easily sewn in place along the bound edge, your project could be a prizewinning showstopper.  We have hessian as well that you could fix up into a crazy scarecrow hat with some fabric flowers sewn into place or how about adding some decorations to a traditional straw boater?  Bridport is home to the nations oldest butchers and with a string of hand sewn sausages made from our brown felt and placed on the hat, worn together with a striped apron and you’ll look surely look the part.  Lets not forget the recent visit by the circus to Bridport town, you could make a fabulous clowns hat.  Anyone remember the visit to Livingstone Textiles by the clown last summer?  My goodness, what a funny fellow he was coming booming up the stairs with his giant shoes and megaphone!  We also recently hosted the first Bridport Folk Festival and the town came alive to the sounds of the morris dancers, many of whom wear really striking hats to dance in.

Don’t forget, we also stock many widths of round hat elastic to hold everything in place while you enjoy the day.  Pop in the shop at the bottom of the Waitrose car park, Bridport to purchase.

A bit of fun for you all, extra large pom-poms! DSC_5561

Now you all must be thinking out there, what can you do with those? Well, we have a few suggestions some rather fun and others a little more serious.

The Tail

Why not add one to a fun fancy dress costume? It would make a great bunny tail!DSC_5560

Bear Ears

As modelled by our Saturday girl wouldn’t these make really fun bear ears! All you have to do is simply thread ribbon through the already attached elastic. DSC_5562

Soft Furnishings

A little more of a serious option would be to add them to a blind or curtains, we have seen smaller ones added to window furnishings in the past and the look is fun and fabulous. These could really add a fun touch to your home.

Or if you’re not that brave they could be used as a blind pull cord.

All these ideas and the pom poms will only cost you a pound each! A bargain for so much fun!

These are currently only available at our Bridport Dorset store.

Spirit of Bridport

Our local Museum in Bridport is currently undergoing a refit.  When it reopens, this replica of the dress worn by Francis Newberry’s ‘Spirit of Bridport’ will be on publicly display.

Made by one of our regular customers Beverley Taylor, we think you’ll agree that she’s done a good copy of the robe in the painting. The town sign can be found on the approach to BridportSpirit of Bridport

Chinese Dragon Fabric

Chinese Dragon 002Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival will fall on February 8th 2016 and, according to the Chinese Zodiac it will mark the beginning of the year of the Monkey.  A similar celebration to the Western Christmas Festival, it is the grandest and most important to Chinese people and so we thought you would like to see our lovely silky dragon fabric in case you were planning to make your own clothes or decorations.  Its quite a short width and would make a lovely table runner or child’s traditional Manadarin style jacket.

Snuggle down Fleece

BurgundyThe cooler days of Autumn are creeping in and if you are out and about early in the morning or during late evening, you may have noticed a bit of a change.

Miss Haversham Dresses Up in Gothic Style

Miss H briar When these lovely crinkled satin curtain fabrics arrived we thought the red colourway would look amazing as a Gothic dress. The only way to check just how great was to dress up Miss Haversham and see. Laura found Simplicity pattern 2172 and set about recreating this Victorian outfit. As you can see the results are spectacular.

The fabric comes in three colourways – the red and silver shown here plus a duck egg blue colour – and is priced at £9.30 per metre. It is so stunning that we don’t think it will last long, so call in to the shop or contact us if you would like to secure some for your project, whether it’s dressmaking or for the home.
