This astoundingly beautiful fabric has given all of the staff here at Livingstones a great deal of angst.
We all love its bright coloursand artistic style and are busy plotting ideas on how to use it to its full potential.
One of us wants a skirt and that would be a great priced piece of clothing at £16.40 as it would only need about half a metre.
Another really wants a sixties swing coat which would look so dramatic, luckily her mum is the talented Meg who owns Livingstones so hopefully she’ll get her wish…watch this space.
I think I’d quite like a pop of colour to go with a purchase from Dorset Arts Week so I might buy a piece for a cushion to give my living room a lift. What would you use it for? Come in to the shop and have a feel, it’s so unbelievably soft.
Our popular beach hut bunting strips are back in stock, so come and get some and get creative!
In the shop we’ve used some of the fabric to make some lovely bunting, with the beach huts alternating with cute little triangle flags that pick out the red. What will you do with yours? we’d love to see pictures of your bunting project!
Beach hut bunting strips are £1.60 for a half strip or £3.20 for a full strip; you can also buy this fabric off the roll for your bigger projects or for curtains and blinds.
With the closure of Ponden Mill in Yeovil, we thought we’d remind you that you can still buy your net curtains in town. We sell a great range of nets at Livingstone Textiles in Yeovil and you can PARK FOR FREE right outside our door.
Pop in and ask to see the designs we hold and well cut to your requirements.
All nets are ready hemmed and come with the channel sewn in at the top ready to hang, We also stock a great range of plastic extending poles as well as the traditional hooks and wire.
We have a little treat for you at Livingstone textiles. In both our Yeovil and Bridport shops we have introduced a PERMANENT BARGAINS RACK!
All of the fabrics on this entire rack have at least 20% off the ticket price. Some have only small amounts left on the rolls for cushions and others have lots, certainly enough to make curtains with and lots more besides. There are some real beauties and the only limit is your imagination. Pop in and grab yourself a bargain.
This glorious velvet is settling happily on our velvet shelf but we don’t think it will be around for long.
The rich splashes of colour are as enchanting as a Monet painting but that not all. This glorious fabric has the feel of the softest kitten fur. In fact, we don’t just stroke it each time we pass it by, we have been spotted giving it a hug too.
Come into the shop and have a feel for yourself, nothing like seeing the real thing before you buy and kluckily for you guys we have a roll in each of our stores 🙂
Note: your batten should already be in place and should also have the Velcro and eyelets attached at this point.
Step 1: Threading the cords
If you have had your blind made by us then your it should already be threaded with cord. However, if you find you need to thread the cords then follow these instructions.
Lay the blind down on a clean table/surface face down. Next thread the cords though the eyelets from the top of the blind to the bottom and secure them by threading through the safety device. You now need to decide on which side of the blind you would like the pull cord to be on for opening and shutting the blind as this will affect the direction the cords.
Secure the blind onto the batten by pressing the Velcro together. You should now thread the cords through the eyelets on the batten starting with the corresponding eyelet for each line of cord, either work left to right (cord will hang on the left) or right to left (cord will hang on the right). Thread all of the loose cords through your wooden acorn to keep them together and tie a loose knot to stop them slipping back through. Do not cut the excess cord off at this point.
Step 2: Adjusting the cord length
In order to ensure you have the correct length of cord pull the blind up and down a few times to make sure it runs level. To determine where to cut the cord you should let the blind hang all the way down so that the acorn will be at its highest point you should have a short distance between the last eyelet on the batten and the acorn. Tie a small knot here to keep the cords together and then cut off the excess, the knot should be hidden inside the acorn when it is pulled down over it.
If you have found that your blind has moved slightly after doing this and is no longer level, you can fix this easily by tweaking the length of the cord, by pulling it through the safety devices on the bottom of the blind, making where it hangs longer or shorter.
Step 3: Fixing the cleat
The cleat should be secured next to the blind cord at least 1.5m above the floor, this is to reduce the risk of small children getting the cord caught around their necks which could lead to strangulation. The cleat requires two screws to be screwed through it and into the wall (or other fixing point) in order to secure it.
Safety note: When the Roman Blind is pulled up the cord must be fully wrapped around the cleat, so that there is no excess cord hanging down for small children to be able to reach.

Don’t forget that Livingstone Textiles stock hundreds of fabrics on the roll for you to chose from. Fabric is one of those products that you really need to feel before you buy and our huge selection means you can usually find something to take away that day. Two weeks before Christmas a customer popped in to the shop and chose one of our semi plains off the roll and we were able to make her blind and cover her baton in time for Christmas.
If you really can’t find anything amongst our stock, we can order from any of our suppliers and most deliver to us within a week, some in just a day! Just ask us when ordering and we’ll do everything we can to get your fabric as quickly as possible and if you really can’t get to us then we’ll happily send you samples of anything in stock, just ask and we’ll try to match you with your ideal fabric.
At Livingstone Textiles we are proud to stock a great selection of linens suitable for dressmaking and curtain making. We hold beautiful soft linens from Russia, rough and slubby linens from Lithuania and beautiful herringbone weaves as well as traditional Irish linens. As well as our regular stock lines in natural colours we can also occasionally source limited colours in gentle washed out greens, oranges, yellows and blues.
We sell a lot of our linen as curtain fabric as its weight allows it to drape beautifully but one or two of our staff members have sewn clothing items from the lighter weights as it hangs really well and below we can share with you a lightweight hoodie that was made from a green/blue linen that was in stock last summer. Sadly this particular colour has not become available again but we still have other colours in stock. Some of our customers also print on our linens and turn them into unique cushions and tea towels.
An absolutely beautiful range of subtle designs from Bill Beaumont in soft muted colours. The stripe effect is called Jordaan and the leaf spray is called Lars. With a pattern repeat of only 33.5cm and a useable width of 140cm there is plenty of cloth for your money. Contact us for further details and prices.
At Livingstone Textiles we are proud to offer you a great selection of Curtain Linings.
We stock a wide range of curtain linings and curtain interlinings (also known as curtain bump) to suit your specific requirements when choosing new curtains or blinds for your home. Curtain linings are used to prolong the life of the more expensive show fabric and offer protection from the sun and other elements that could otherwise cause deterioration of the cloth. They also enable more of the pattern and colour to be seen inside the room when light is on the otherside, ie; daylight, sunlight and streetlight as these will be shining straight through your fabric. In both our Bridport and our Yeovil shops we have samples of the wonderful Jim Dickens fabrics available for you to come and look at. These fabrics are fabulous for upholstery or for curtains and will add a touch of class to any home.
We have the following sample books for you to choose from in our shops so you can see and feel these fabrics first hand.
We also have a few other samples available to look at that are from the Merlot collection, the Olympos collection, the Isabella Collection, the Corsini collection and the Avalon collection. We are able to loan you the pattern books to check colours and designs in your room, and can give you a no obligation quote for curtains and upholstery from your measurements. If you are not able to measure, one of our seamstresses can visit in the local area to determine your requirements.
We wanted to share with you two new wonderful collections of fabric we have to order from our Bridport and Yeovil shops. Part of the iLiv range, these collections provide some fantastic choices for curtains, blinds and upholstery. We also have a selection of designs and colours in stock at Bridport and Yeovil as part of our new autumn range.
This is a range based on a Botanical theme. It includes two different floral designs, Etched Vine and Sketchbook featuring off-white patterns on muted colour backgrounds, one of which also includes birds in flight within the design. These fabrics are suitable for general domestic upholstery, as is the other print, Parchment, which includes seed heads and foliage in a coloured print on a pale background. There is also a leaf themed embroidered fabric, Harper, which can be used for light domestic upholstery. Toning beautifully with the colours in the other fabrics is a check fabric, Shaker, which you could use for cushions, upholster a chair or make a heavier curtain. Finally in this collection, we have a large leaf woven design, Laurie, on a lovely heavy polyester, cotton and viscose mix fabric. This would look fantastic as a door curtain to keep out those pesky draughts, but is not suitable for upholstery. We have a selection of these fabrics in stock at our Bridport and Yeovil stores, and all of them are available to order by the metre. More pictures and details of the various colourways can be seen on the iLiv website.
This is a truly stunning collection which includes traditional floral designs, chenille fabrics and some crewel fabric, which is often very difficult to find. The chenille fabrics are Carnival with a herringbone design and Festival, a brightly coloured stripe. Both are suitable for general domestic upholstery as well as curtains and blinds, and would brighten up any room. Also suitable for upholstery is Byron, a woven check with a small pattern that is not overwhelming. This fabric also looks great on the reverse, where the pattern forms a stripe. The colours tone well with the other fabrics in the range. For prints the collection includes Chiswick, a leaf design and Heritage, a very traditional looking floral and bird design. Again these fabrics can also be used for upholstery. Finally the jewels of the collection are the crewel fabrics. We have Farleigh, a lovely leaf design on a cream background, and Couture which features circles, flowers and leaves on a cotton/linen blend coloured base cloth. These crewel fabrics are suitable for curtains, blinds and cushions but not upholstery. They would certainly add impact to any room. You can click here to view more details of the Highgrove collection.

Details of the fabrics shown above are as follows (from top to bottom):
We are very proud of our country and particularly our farming roots in Dorset and so when every year the county holds The Great Dorset Steam Fair some of us go a little tractor crazy.
The Great Dorset Steam Fair has been running in Dorset for 49 years, the show started small as an event where people could come and see how people lived and work in years gone by. The show is now widely recognized as a National Heritage show as well as being regarded as the leading show of its type world wide. Now because of its huge size and reputation, people visit and travel with their vintage exhibitions from all over the country and the world. The Great Dorset Steam Fair is now thought to be one of Europes biggest shows.
As mentioned above some of our members of staff (being collectors themselves) go a little crazy when it comes to tractors and vintage machinery so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to you all that we have a few tractor and farm like fabrics within our two shops. Our longest standing member of staff is a farmers wife as is our manageress at Livingstone Textiles, Yeovil.
This first fabric is a light weight cotton with beautiful and vivid illustrations of vintage tractors at work. This fabric really takes you back to years gone by and how the fields were worked with these beautiful old machines. This fabric is only available at our Bridport Dorset store but can be ordered from Yeovil Somerset. It is an ideal weight for patchwork and dressmaking.
The second fabric tractor fabric we have in stock is a curtain weight material, it is a lot heavier than the cotton one above and work make ideal curtains, cushions and blinds although it is not quite heavy enough to upholster with. This fabric features a range of tractors in more of a sketchy artist way, slightly more cartoon like. This is a fun design that work be ideal for a tractor crazed child (or adult!). This fabric, similar to the one above shows the tractors at work in the fields and also puts the mind back to years gone by.
If you are traveling down for The Great Dorset Steam Fair, why not have a day out from the vintage work and come and see our vintage inspired fabrics in our Bridport Shop and take some of the Dorset Life home with you.
If you would like any information on the fabric mentioned in this post please contact us with your details and the information you require.
