With all of us becoming very conscious of throwaway plastics and trying to reduce our use and consumption, one of our Bridport team members decided to make up a bag to put her sandwiches in. Made from less than a fat quarter of fabric, she lined it with a ripstop nylon and popped a velcro closure onto the top and bottom of the first two corners that fold over the sandwiches. She then made a button hole in one corner and stitched a button onto the showside of the remaining corner that make a neat little packet when closed together, keeping her lunch fresh and looking very pretty in the staff fridge. Needless to say that we all want one!
Adorable! Look out for her next experiment with waxed fabrics.
With Valentine’s day coming up fast, why not treat yourself to a book full of ideas for some lovely heart-themed projects and quick makes? these projects will also be good for craft fairs, Christmas, or just for making life more pretty all the year round!
For the smaller makes, choose from our huge range of fabrics on the roll, or browse through our fat quarters to get a smaller piece of something lovely. To finish it off, indulge yourself by choosing some pretty things from our selection of ribbons and buttons – you’re bound to find something you like!
At Livingstone Textiles we are proud to stock a great selection of linens suitable for dressmaking and curtain making. We hold beautiful soft linens from Russia, rough and slubby linens from Lithuania and beautiful herringbone weaves as well as traditional Irish linens. As well as our regular stock lines in natural colours we can also occasionally source limited colours in gentle washed out greens, oranges, yellows and blues.
We sell a lot of our linen as curtain fabric as its weight allows it to drape beautifully but one or two of our staff members have sewn clothing items from the lighter weights as it hangs really well and below we can share with you a lightweight hoodie that was made from a green/blue linen that was in stock last summer. Sadly this particular colour has not become available again but we still have other colours in stock. Some of our customers also print on our linens and turn them into unique cushions and tea towels.
Is it time for a new blanket for your dog? This new colourway in our soft cuddly fleece is perfect for a luxury dog blanket and you could easily make a dog beanbag out of it as well. Of course, you can use it for other projects as it’s a perfect fabric for dog lovers. Available in both of the Livingstone Textiles fabric shops in Yeovil, Somerset and in Bridport, Dorset.

One of our customers brought in their latest make last week and we wanted to share it with you. This lovely bag is made with one of our range of tapestry fabrics, which gives a great heavyweight strong bag. The bag has a bright colourful striped lining as well.
Also inside the bag is this delightful fishy purse, when you open up the purse you find another insert for your coins. The detail and work in this make is just great.

Lots of you have been in this week to buy shimmery, sparkly, witchy fabrics for costumes not only for your little ones but for yourselves as well. Don’t forget to take extra care with shop bought costumes as many man-made fabrics are highly flammable.
If you are at all concerned, it’s not too late to pop in to the Bridport Shop and buy our Flame Retardant Spray, suitable for home application, it makes these synthetic fibres a lot safer when the instructions are followed correctly and we’ll issue you with a fire certificate as well. It’s also a legal requirement for any fabrics in public buildings to be flame retardant treated, including curtains, stage sets and costumes. Worth bearing in mind if you’re currently rehearsing for panto season. We’ve seen evidence of a lot of pumpkin carving going on as we’ve traveled to and from Livingstone Textiles from across West Dorset. Have a great time tonight and stay safe, whatever your plans.

We have these fabrics in our ‘fancy dress room’ at Bridport on a lovely old trolley which came from one of the fabric mills which are sadly no longer a large part of UK industry.

We are very proud of our country and particularly our farming roots in Dorset and so when every year the county holds The Great Dorset Steam Fair some of us go a little tractor crazy.
The Great Dorset Steam Fair has been running in Dorset for 49 years, the show started small as an event where people could come and see how people lived and work in years gone by. The show is now widely recognized as a National Heritage show as well as being regarded as the leading show of its type world wide. Now because of its huge size and reputation, people visit and travel with their vintage exhibitions from all over the country and the world. The Great Dorset Steam Fair is now thought to be one of Europes biggest shows.
As mentioned above some of our members of staff (being collectors themselves) go a little crazy when it comes to tractors and vintage machinery so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to you all that we have a few tractor and farm like fabrics within our two shops. Our longest standing member of staff is a farmers wife as is our manageress at Livingstone Textiles, Yeovil.
This first fabric is a lightweight cotton with beautiful and vivid illustrations of vintage tractors at work. This fabric really takes you back to years gone by and how the fields were worked with these beautiful old machines. This fabric is only available at our Bridport Dorset store but can be ordered from Yeovil Somerset. It is an ideal weight for patchwork and dressmaking.
The second fabric tractor fabric we have in stock is a curtain weight material, it is a lot heavier than the cotton one above and work make ideal curtains, cushions and blinds although it is not quite heavy enough to upholster with. This fabric features a range of tractors in more of a sketchy artist way, slightly more cartoon-like. This is a fun design that work be ideal for a tractor crazed child (or adult!). This fabric, similar to the one above shows the tractors at work in the fields and also puts the mind back to years gone by.
If you are traveling down for The Great Dorset Steam Fair, why not have a day out from the vintage work and come and see our vintage inspired fabrics in our Bridport Shop and take some of the Dorset Life home with you.
If you would like any information on the fabric mentioned in this post please contact us with your details and the information you require.
Our newest patchwork course is well under way in our Yeovil shop. Having a dedicated teaching space enables us to offer you our sewing expertise in a small group where you can learn new skills and make new friends.
You can see that all our ladies are happy and relaxed and busy creating some beautiful patchwork, all skillfully lead by our tutor.
Livingstone Textiles in Bridport is very fortunate to be located next to the Jurassic coast, a world heritage site where some really amazing and idea changing fossils have been found. Bridport as a town likes to celebrate this love of its history and because of this every year Bridport has the Jurassic Fields Music Festival. This is a family friendly fun event over 2 days featuring music, comedy, food and many other entertainments. This might be something you quickly fancy going to, or you might have already planned coming along to the event. If so why not pop into see us Livingstone Textiles at the bottom of Waitrose car park, where we have a massive range of fabrics, from dress making to curtain making fabrics. We also have a range of haberdashery, dress patterns, cushions, and foam. You could even pick up a souvenir the form of fabric, we have a fabulous Dinosaur curtain weight fabric that could help you to remember the amazing time you have had at Bridport. This fun Dinosaur fabric is 140cm wide with a pattern repeat of 62.5cm and comes in at an amazing £12.50 per metre. It is a printed polycotton linen-look fabric with a beautiful design, this would be ideal in a boy’s or girl’s bedroom and would be suitable for curtains, blinds, cushions, and bedspreads. However, it would not be suitable for upholstery due to the lightness of the material. The natural looking polycotton linen colour background means that the material could work in most rooms with a range of different colour schemes, it could be made into the feature of the room or could equally blend in depending on the style of your room.
This polyester cotton blend background cloth comes in a range of other fun designs, from fried eggs, to farm yard animals and flamingos. If you would like a sample of this fabric or would like to know what else is in this fabric range why not contact us with your details and your question and we will be happy to help. Or if you’re passing either of our stores in Bridport or Yeovil why not pop in and ask one of our very helpful staff members.
One of our Yeovil colleagues has made this tablet holder using the book, Half Yard Home that we now have in stock in both the Bridport and Yeovil fabric shops of Livingstone Textiles.
She made it using this bag weight fried egg material that we just couldn’t resist getting in for all your craft projects. You can even have a blind or curtains made it in it if you fancy something quirky at your window!
Now you can enjoy your morning cuppa with eggs as you check your social media and ‘Like’ us on Facebook.
How do you like your eggs in the morning? Livingstone Textiles like theirs on fabric!
This exciting fabric is new in at Livingstone Textiles Bridport Dorset and Yeovil Somerset and would make the most fun kitchen curtains. This fabric is sutiable for cushons, curtains, roman blinds and bags. It is 140cm wide and is priced at £12.50 per metre.
Two soft velveteen cushions made in this gorgeous rust coloured fabric have been made by a member of staff to revamp a lovely old reading chair. The cushions were piped in the velvet as well and a zip inserted at the back.
Velvet can be a bit tricky to sew as the layers have a tendency to creep as you feed the fabric under the machine but one way of combatting this is to use a walking foot. The fabric shown is available from Livingstone Textiles at only £7 per metre and is 150cm wide making it ideal for curtains, cushions and even dressmaking. It drapes beautifully into soft folds when hung and the texture catches the light. In this instance, it was chosen to complement the historical nature of the chair and bring out the warm colour of the wood. If you’d like to have a go at making your own cushions, our cushion pack is available and comes complete with any fabric you choose and a full set of instructions. It also makes an ideal gift.
These fabulous fabrics are from a range of fabrics that we are able to order in, a really simple fabric design available in the two colourways, blue and yellow. The dog design is printed onto a cotton base cloth which is ideal for cushions, blinds and curtains.
What works very well with these fabrics is the coordinating fabric in the stripes. With these coordingating fabric why not add a stripe to the bottom or top of a bling or a trim to a pair of curtians? Another option with these fabrics is to coordinate tie back for a pair of curtians, wouldnt it be fun to have a striped pair of curtains and a doggy pair of tie backs or the other way around?
The weight of these fabrics are ideal for cushion, blinds and curtains. The stripe is slightly textured with a herringbone likeness to it.
With the dog fabric in this cushion range, the maker has added a fun pom-pom trim which helps to frame the design. This is a really fun design that you could have so much fun with if not pom-poms why not pipe some cushions in the matching coloured stripe. With the stripe cut on the bias you would get a fabulous barbars pole look to it. These is a range of other anaimal fabrics that come in this range of fabrics as can be seen in the image above from fun foxes to a beautiful forest scene. These fabrics are also available to order from Livingstone Textiles Bridport Dorset and Yeovil Somerset.
Both of these fabrics are available to order at both our Yeovil Somerset and Bridport Dorset. If you would like a sample please contact us with your details and information on what you require and we will help happy to help.
