We’ve picked out some really striking trims for your sewing projects this month. They have an air of European Bohemia about them and will definitely liven up clothing, bags and even upholstery projects. On the shelves at Livingstone Textiles from January.
We are so excited to share our new range of bag accessories with you.
Many of you come into the shop with your gorgeous bag creations and over the past twelve months we have focussed on expanding our range of straps and webbing tapes to give you more choice when matching your fabrics to the handles you need.
We also stock D rings in a couple of sizes and some adjusters as well but we have now arranged for you to be able to purchase whole sets of rings, adjusters and sliders in two sizes available in gold or nickel. Howeve our current favourites are these anodised accessories, also available in two sizes. Their irridescence is really beautiful and they will certainly be a talking point on any of your creations because they are very unusual. We’re calling them the Dragonfly range and we also have cute thread scissors in this finish as well.
Pop in and ask us to show you what we have available and bring your project in too, we love helping you to choose something special that works with your fabric.
This beautiful patchwork was constructed in Wales and gifted to a friend in the 1970’s.
The hexagons are very clearly Laura Ashley cotton dress fabrics from that period and have been beautifully hand pieced together using a technique known as English Paper Piecing or EPP, to create a double bedspread. One of our makers was asked to remove the nylon bedsheet that had been used as a backing and to replace it with something more suitable.
She decided that a plain white cotton sheeting would look the most fitting as a backing fabric as it compliments the blue and white design of the patchwork top. She also created a thicker quilt by adding a layer of batting between the top and the sheeting. The batting used is our Warm & Natural needle punched cotton and it is a completely natural product that does not seperate or bunch up. It can be machine washed and because the fibres are pure cotton, the needle can pass through the layers quickly and easily when quilting by hand or machine.
The batting can be purchased from either of our shops or you can order it by ringing us and we will ship it out to you the same day. This product is not currently available to buy on our webshop but we are happy to send out free samples on request. We stock both cotton and polycotton sheeting in plain black, white and royal blue and can also mail out samples and whole pieces. We have a few more colours to choose from in the poly cotton. The quilt was made using an unconventional method where the layers were placed right sides together along with the cotton batting and then bagged out through a gap left in the top. The gap was carefully top stitched together then the centre of the quilt was marked. The Hexagon that fell in the centre of the patchwork was then hand quilted followed by random other hexagons. In this way the quilt could be enjoyed very quickly as a coverlet but added to at any time our seamstress wanted to do a little hand sewing. And of course January is the perfect time for disappearing under a mountain of fabric layers to quilt on a winters evening.
If you would like to learn more about patchwork and quilting, or just take some basic sewing lessons then have a look at the classes we will be running over the next few weeks.
We’re very excited to offer our customers a 10% discount across all of our Christmas fabrics until the end of January 2019.

We’ve just got some gorgeous new fleece designs in and they’re super soft!
Lots of new designs are available for snuggly projects and some are reversible. We’ve even got a couple that feature a different design on each side and the wonderful thing about fleece is that it needs absolutely no hemming at all, making it perfect for quick and easy projects like scarves, hats and ponchos. Its competitive price means that you can make some quick and easy handmade christmas gifts without breaking the bank.
The time for Christmas makes is well and truly upon us, and we’re ready for it!
We’ve got a fantastic array of Christmas fabric waiting for you at Livingstones, and with traditional prints, christmassy patterns and rustic scandi to choose from, you’re bound to find exactly what you’re looking for.
We have some new fabrics on our shelves this autumn we would like to share with you. This delightful flower and fruit themed jacquard woven fabric feels autumnal to me, as all the locally grown apples appear in our local farm shops. This fabric is absolutely stunning with its red tones on a light cream background and is equally suitable for curtains and upholstery, so you could even match in your furniture. You can buy this fabric online or request a sample using the link below, or see it on the roll at our Bridport store.
Two new additions to our popular ‘pop art linen look’ range are this stag fabric and pheasant design fabric. These have a small all-over print with different designs. The pheasant fabric can be joined across widths when making curtains, but the stag fabric has been cut down from a wider fabric and does not join so is only suitable for curtains up to one width in size. These fabrics are also suitable for craft projects and we are sure you could make some lovely presents from them.
Another animal fabric is heading to the farmyard with delightful stylised farm animals and birds. These are large designs printed in rows across the fabric, and the large size of the print lends itself to use for applique. You could cut out individual animals and put one on the middle of a cushion or bag, which would be a really economical use of the fabric. Of course, if your preference is for curtains (maybe for a country kitchen?) we are happy to make curtains to fit your individual windows. You can also browse our full range of animal fabrics.
Here’s a fun new product we’ve got in stock, just in time for your Christmas crafting!
These squares of glittery self-adhesive fabric in a range of colours can be easily cut to shape with scissors to add glittery detail to all sorts of things, so get creative!
As they are self adhesive, that can be used on wood, metal and card to add a little glitter to almost anything, but this glitter fabric can also be used on clothes and other fabric items; simply cut to shape and remove the backing, then stick in place and iron for 60 seconds. Once cool the finished item can be safely washed at 30 degrees (hand wash recommended)
This is a fabulous fabric with all things sewing related in the design, what more could you want!?
This fabric is a durable polycotton with vibrant colours that make all the beautifully printed sewing instruments stand out. This fabric looks wonderful made up as a roman blind and would also look great as curtains, these would make a perfect addition to any sewing room. It could even be made up into cushions or a bag, as a gift for that sewing enthusiast you know.
There is a vintage theme to the sewing instruments with the iconic Singer sewing machine and vintage mannequin along with the kind of haberdashery you would expect to find in a well-stocked sewing box of maybe your mother or grandmother.
This fabric is available in our Bridport shop or you can purchase it online by following the link below to our web shop.
It’s time to get planning if you’re running a craft stall anywhere this autumn and start making up your Christmas Crafts.
We have 3 lovely Advent calender kits in stock ready for you to make up and a panel of the twelve days of Christmas repeated three times so there are lots of opportunities for card making, stitched gifts and lap quilts.
We also have a great selection of new Christmas fabrics in stock and we are steering away from the more traditional designs. One of our favourites is the navy fabric with the white polar bear constellation across it. The penguins are pretty cute too.
You may already know that we love to be as eco friendly as we can in our stores – we wrote recently about our recycled polyester thread. We would also like to share with you our eco felt, which is made from polyester produced from post-consumer plastic bottles. As you know, the success of recycling all depends on having an end product which uses up the recycled raw materials, and this is a really great example.
This is an inexpensive felt, with a good range of colours and is suitable to sew or glue. It can be used for children’s craft projects but equally is really useful for applique as it does not fray when cut.
In addition as it is an artificial fibre it will melt when heated, which is required for some craft uses. If you need a felt with some wool content you can take a look at our vintage felt range.
This felt is available to buy online by the metre at 36″/90cm width, and also at our Bridport store in 9″ squares. Please click on the link below to see the full range of colours, find out more information or request a sample.
We love our show dummy’s new look, created by one of our talented colleagues here at Livingstone Textiles. She is wearing a kimono made out of one of our oriental fabrics. This fabric has a beautiful pattern of cranes and luxurious gold highlights. It is 100% cotton, 110cm wide and priced at £17.90 per metre. We don’t have much of this specific fabric left (although it may be able to be reordered) so have not listed it on our new website shop. However you can see a selection of our other oriental fabrics below, and you can browse the full oriental cotton collection here.
Our popular beach hut bunting strips are back in stock, so come and get some and get creative!
In the shop we’ve used some of the fabric to make some lovely bunting, with the beach huts alternating with cute little triangle flags that pick out the red. What will you do with yours? we’d love to see pictures of your bunting project!
Beach hut bunting strips are £1.60 for a half strip or £3.20 for a full strip; you can also buy this fabric off the roll for your bigger projects or for curtains and blinds.
This glorious velvet is settling happily on our velvet shelf but we don’t think it will be around for long.
The rich splashes of colour are as enchanting as a Monet painting but that not all. This glorious fabric has the feel of the softest kitten fur. In fact, we don’t just stroke it each time we pass it by, we have been spotted giving it a hug too.
Come into the shop and have a feel for yourself, nothing like seeing the real thing before you buy and luckily for you guys we have a roll in each of our stores 🙂
Our Yeovil store shared this adorable lampshade made with Animal Alphabet fabric!
To get the look, this cute fabric is available in store at £17.85 per metre, and we also sell lampshade kits, so you can easily get a smart, professional-looking finish either with this fabric, or the fabric of your choice.

We have them back! The glorious two tone organzas that flew out of the shop last year are back and we’re so delighted to have more colours to offer you. The blue/green colourway is one of the favourites and we expect this to sell really fast but while you’re in the shop, check out the others as well.
The grape is delightful. A combination of deep pink and petrol blue, it shimmers and changes as it moves under the light. If you can’t get in to see us over the easter Break, remember we can always send out samples in the post and you can order by telephone on 01308456844.
With all of us becoming very conscious of throwaway plastics and trying to reduce our use and consumption, one of our Bridport team members decided to make up a bag to put her sandwiches in. Made from less than a fat quarter of fabric, she lined it with a ripstop nylon and popped a velcro closure onto the top and bottom of the first two corners that fold over the sandwiches. She then made a button hole in one corner and stitched a button onto the showside of the remaining corner that make a neat little packet when closed together, keeping her lunch fresh and looking very pretty in the staff fridge. Needless to say that we all want one!
Adorable! Look out for her next experiment with waxed fabrics.
With Valentine’s day coming up fast, why not treat yourself to a book full of ideas for some lovely heart-themed projects and quick makes? these projects will also be good for craft fairs, Christmas, or just for making life more pretty all the year round!
For the smaller makes, choose from our huge range of fabrics on the roll, or browse through our fat quarters to get a smaller piece of something lovely. To finish it off, indulge yourself by choosing some pretty things from our selection of ribbons and buttons – you’re bound to find something you like!
At Livingstone Textiles we are proud to stock a great selection of linens suitable for dressmaking and curtain making. We hold beautiful soft linens from Russia, rough and slubby linens from Lithuania and beautiful herringbone weaves as well as traditional Irish linens. As well as our regular stock lines in natural colours we can also occasionally source limited colours in gentle washed out greens, oranges, yellows and blues.
We sell a lot of our linen as curtain fabric as its weight allows it to drape beautifully but one or two of our staff members have sewn clothing items from the lighter weights as it hangs really well and below we can share with you a lightweight hoodie that was made from a green/blue linen that was in stock last summer. Sadly this particular colour has not become available again but we still have other colours in stock. Some of our customers also print on our linens and turn them into unique cushions and tea towels.
Is it time for a new blanket for your dog? This new colourway in our soft cuddly fleece is perfect for a luxury dog blanket and you could easily make a dog beanbag out of it as well. Of course, you can use it for other projects as it’s a perfect fabric for dog lovers. Available in both of the Livingstone Textiles fabric shops in Yeovil, Somerset and in Bridport, Dorset.
It’s not too late to put an outfit together in time for New Year’s Eve. We’ve still got plenty of sparkle here at Livingstone Textiles so pop in and get some sequins and stars to add to your party outfit.
We’ve also got some fabulous feathers and flapper fringe to give you the Charlston Feel and fur in a rainbow of colours plus ribbons and buttons as well as trouser, skirt and bra extenders if last years outfit is a tad unforgiving.
