We wrote a little while ago about our new amazing rainbow cuddle fur, and thought about creating a scarf from it. Because this fabric is one sided, you can’t just cut a strip of fabric as you don’t want the back to show. So here is how to make your own scarf using the tube method, and to go one better you can put a pompom on the end.
Cut a strip of fabric across the width and about 25 – 30cm wide. Fold in half right sides together and sew along the edges with a sewing machine or overlocker (the edges will probably not fray, but check your fabric to be sure). If you don’t want pompoms sew across one end of the fabric.
You now have a tube of wrong way out fabric.
Turn the tube right side out. If you are not adding pompoms sew the open end of your scarf closed and you are finished.
To add pompoms, take a running stitch all the way around your tube about 10 – 15 cms from one end. Pull up the running stitch to gather the fabric and fasten off.
Stuff the open end of your scarf with hollowfibre toy stuffing.
Take a second running stitch all around the open end near the edge of the fabric. Pull up again, tucking in the edges of the fabric as you go, then fasten off. Repeat for the second pompom at the other end of the scarf.
You now have an amazing statement scarf with oversize pompoms!
We have a lovely offer for you at our Yeovil store this December – simply spend £10 on knitting yarn and pick up a free knitting pattern from our extensive range. You could choose one of the patterns for this fantastic glittery tinsel yarn to knit something fun for Christmas, or bag yourself a new project to indulge in over the Christmas break. There’s probably even (just) time to knit a sweater for Christmas (I am currently knitting a Harry Potter Weasley sweater as well as the Christmas knitalong). This will really keep the cost down for your project, and if that’s not enough we have some bargain yarn in store at the moment while stocks last – first come first served. Just remember you need to spend £10 to get your free pattern and the offer ends on 31st December. Check out our opening times over Christmas on the side of this post. We will look forward to seeing you in Yeovil!
Today sees the launch of the first TotallyLocally Bridport Passport! We know Bridport is fiercely independant and the wealth of variety in our shops shows that we love to shop local! So our local retailers are joining together to give you the chance to win vouchers, just by doing your shopping in the local area this December. Pick up your passport at any participating Bridport retailer and get it stamped every time you spend £10 in any outlet which is joining in the scheme (there are over 60 independent businesses in the scheme). Once you have 8 stamps on your passport, hand it in to Bridport Tourist Information Centre to be entered in the draw. There are 5 x £50 vouchers up for grabs.
We are still loving this stunning fabric from Chess and named Grassland, it sums up misty autumn mornings, foxes out hunting for food and and smoky bonfires. The pigments in this Paprika colourway are particularly seasonal with its orangey hues and a Roman Blind from this teamed with luxurious velvet curtains will create a super cosy space to relax out of the wind and rain.
We sell a lot of beautiful tartans at Livingstone Textiles and one question that seems to come up again and again is ‘which tartan am I allowed to wear if I’m not Scottish? Well the answer to that is quite simply that you can wear any tartan that you like, the only exception to this rule is the Balmoral tartan which by royal decree should only be worn by the Royal Family. Many people think that they can only wear the Black Watch or the Stewart so you’ll be pleased to learn that you can buy and wear any of the tartans in our shop in complete confidence.
Here’s a small selection of what we currently have in stock. We also sell gorgeously snuggly tartan fleece as well and it makes great pyjama trousers 🙂
New into our Bridport store are these gorgeous Christmas patterned fat quarters. Perfect for festive craft, they come in sets of 5, and cost £12 a pack. Approximately sized 25cm x 25 cm.
These can be used to make Christmas bunting, tree ornaments, patches, and more. We also have our on-the-roll Christmas fabric available throughout our stores if you are in need of a larger festive fix !
Available in both Bridport and Yeovil stores, and in a variety of fabrics, from now up until December!
Bridport Hat Festival 2019 is fast approaching, and with that comes the inevitable pressure to create an astounding garb for your head. Well fear not, as out selection of ribbons, trims, feather and more is sure to offer something to anyone looking to spruce up their headwear.
This piece was brought in on Saturday by a customer, and they used our rainbow feathers (£6.45 /m – 60cm used) and rainbow cord (40p /m) to add some colour and life to this vintage top hat!
We have a huge range of different fabrics and accessories you can add to any headpiece to help prepare you for a Saturday of crazy hat-ness.
Appliqué is ornamental needlework in which pieces of fabric in different shapes and patterns are sewn or stuck onto a larger piece to form a picture or pattern. It is commonly used as decoration, especially on garments. The technique is accomplished either by hand or machine.
Applique is an easily recognizable form of art and decoration that is used throughout the world. The technique involves sewing various scenes or patterns on small pieces of fabric. These fabric pieces are then attached, for example by stitching or glueing, to larger pieces of fabric. You can decorate clothing like jeans with applique or it can be used to decorate a quilt. The word “appliqué” is derived from the French verb “appliquer,” meaning “to put on.” It refers to a textile craft in which one piece of fabric is sewn over another for a decorative effect. Appliqué is found in many forms of folk art, from Gujarati Indian tent fabrics to American colonial quilts and Eastern European traditional costumes.
If you’re not sure where to start then get in touch and we will try to help. We run classes in applique and patchwork at our Yeovil premises and we also have some inspirational books in stock at both shops.
It’s no secret that we recommend lining your curtains! Linings give protection from the sun, add body to your curtains, and just give a nicer finish all around. So why not take advantage of our offer of free polycotton lining with your curtains or curtain fabric this May? If you want a superior lining, no problem. Simply choose the best lining for you and your room (we know a lot of people favour a blackout lining) and all you will pay is the difference in price.
Our free curtain lining offer is now half way through, but it’s not too late. You can still browse our extensive choice of fabrics from roll stock and sample hangers, choose whether to make the curtains yourself or have our experienced makers hand finish them to your specification, and get a no-obligation quote so you can see how reasonable our rates are for a superb quality finish. Just choose your fabric, take your measurements and request a quote before the 31st May. All quotes given during May will be honoured for one week after the end of the offer.
New in as part of our spring and summer range, we have these lovely double gauze fabrics. Made out of 100% cotton, they have the crinkled cheesecloth look, but the double layer gives more body and means they are not so see-through. We think these fabrics would be lovely as a floaty scarf, or a boho top (hint: we have a pattern sale on during May 2019!). They are also suitable for baby uses – you could make a baby wrap-style carrier or just a more robust baby muslin. At the Bridport fabric shop we have these fabrics in pink and grey, and at our Yeovil fabric shop you can choose from pink and blue. Whichever colour you choose, we think you will love these high quality gauze fabrics.
We’ve been talking for many months about re-designing our bottom room to make it safer for everyone as a retail space. This has historically been our delivery area but we also have some rolls of cloth stored on shelving that our customers enjoy having a look at. We were sad to see another long established business go in Bridport this year with the closure of ‘This & That’ however the legacy lives on because we now have some of their shelving in our delivery area!
We’ve used the shelving to divide the room off and create a new shop display area with a great new space for us to work in behind it. We had to relocate one or two things as anyone does when they’re having a shift around so we dismantled our old Coats thread stand. We’ve been selling off all the old Coats stock at massively reduced prices as we’ve gone over to selling Gutterman threads instead so don’t forget to look at the colours we still have left in stock when you’re next passing, you can top up your thread stocks really cheaply because they are now reduced to 50p per reel for the small size and £1 a reel for the large!!
We took the opportunity to have a bit of a play last week and created a colourful fish from old cotton reels and we’ve hung him in the stairwell next to some of our gorgeous new woven tapestry fabrics that are available in these new wave designs and don’t forget that you get FREE LINING with curtains ordered throughout May. We will be developing this theme over the coming weeks to create a summer carnival feel to the entrance that we hope you enjoy it as much as we do creating it.
Welcome to the Wild Wild West, home of the fastest drawn scissors at dawn.
Livingstone Textiles has two fabulous fabric outlets in the Westcountry bursting with hundreds of metres of gorgeous material ready to be made into lovely projects. Did you know that as well as stocking fabric for dressmaking and material for making curtains, blinds and cushions, we also stock a number of wipe clean pvc tablings and oil cloths that are not only used for covering tables?
Here you can see that this vintage design of Cowboys and Indians has been made into a waterproof bag or shopping, books or school/college stuff. It’s been lined with one of our bright and cheerful childrens fabrics featuring orange dinosaurs and has strong canvas straps stitched firmly between the layers. The whole bag is robust and we think the design has a vintage vibe cool enough for both adults and kids. The fabric is 130cm wide and costs £8.50 per metre and can be bought at either of our shops in Yeovil or Bridport.
We’ve just taken delivery of two great new quilted fabrics in navy and coffee colours to go with our super shiny silver quilted material.
The navy colourway is available in a traditional diamond quilt pattern as is the silver and the coffee colour is a little bit different because it has a quilted flower pattern. All three are great for projects like a gillet which having no sleeves is quite quick to make up and the fabric can also be made into a funky picnic rug or an anorak if you fancy a more involved project.
The navy and the coffee designs are available in a 148cm width and cost £7.50 per metre and the silver quilted is 110cm wide and costs £9.80 per metre. They are not yet available on our webshop but you can purchase by mail order over the phone or pop in to one of our shops at either Yeovil or Bridport. Clicke here for our contact details.
If you would like to choose a different curtain lining, don’t worry, the price of the polycotton lining will be deducted from your order and you will only pay the price differential. We stock sun-resistant cotton linings in 3 colours, blackout lining which is particularly useful at this time of the year with early morning, and thermal lining. Coloured linings can be ordered from our sample book.
We have a full bespoke curtain making service at both our stores, using local seamstresses who make and hand finish your curtains to your own measurements so they fit your windows exactly. For local clients a measure can be arranged, or see our simple guide to how to measure your own windows. We can supply a no-obligation quote, please contact us or call into our stores for details. The length of time from placing your order to receiving your curtains varies according to demand, but is usually around 4 weeks.
If you are making the curtains yourself, you can still qualify for our offer and can have free lining up to the number of metres of curtain fabric purchased. You can even take advantage of this offer when shopping online – simply quote “please add free lining” in the order notes when placing your order before 31st May 2019 and free polycotton lining will be included. Click on the link below to see all the curtain fabrics this offer applies to.
TERMS & CONDITIONS : Applies to purchases of curtain fabrics or made to measure curtains. Dress and craft fabrics are not included in this offer, and we reserve the right to designate which fabrics are included. Sale fabrics are not included, only fabrics purchased or ordered at full price. Maximum quantity of free lining is the same as the quantity of fabric purchased. Polycotton lining will be supplied free, other linings are available on payment of the price differential. Offer ends 31st May 2019, quotes for curtains requested by this date will have the lining offer honoured for one week only after the end of the offer.

At least once a week at Livingstone Textiles we have someone new through our doors who is just starting out on their sewing adventure.
They are usually rather bewildered at the array of fabrics, haberdashery and techniques and have many questions for us so we have devised a little step by step guide to help rookie stitchers through their first sewing project.
1] GET A SEWING MACHINE
Beg or borrow a machine that does a straight stitch, a zig zag and goes forward and back. Anything else will be of no use for quite a while so arm yourself with a basic machine for sewing garments. You can try before you buy in many fabric shops (including livingstone textiles) or order one on line at a reasonable price.
2] GET BASIC TOOLS
To start with any basic sewing pattern you need a basic set of tools. Needles (hand & machine) pins, large scissors, a seam ripper, marking chalk and a tape measure. You will also find an iron and ironing board very helpful.
3] PICK A PROJECT
Decide on a pattern that you want to wear or use, it’s important to really want what you will be making as that is what will motivate you to finish it. A garment should be a basic shape with simple features like short sleeves and little shaping. A bag should be unfussy with simple lines and few pockets or fancy features.
Grab a cup of tea, a piece of cake and a fabric remanant and settle down comfortably with your sewing machine manual. Have a quick read through then practice lifting and dropping the presser foot, threading up the machine and sewing backwards and forwards until you feel a bit more confident with the pedal. Practice stitching a straight line at various speeds and practice a zigzag stitch that runs parallel to the edge of your remnant
5] BUY FABRIC!
This is the one area that you will get very good at very quickly. Buy a fabric that is recommended on your pattern for the project you wish to create along with a matching thread and any other bits and pieces that are mentioned.
6] START SEWING….
Read your pattern carefully, lay it out on your fabric and cut out your pieces. Label them and copy on any lines or markings from the pattern. Thread the machine up and off you go! Remember, it doesn’t matter if you make a mistake, just unpick it and try again. Remember that there are many helpful tuition videos on Youtube and lots of hints and tips can be found here on our website
