Both of these new fabric swatch books have a beautiful range of colours that compliments our already vast range of fabric hangers and swatch books.
SHETLAND- £21.50 per metre 145cm wide

Did you know that as well as stocking fabric for dressmaking and material for making curtains, blinds and cushions, we also stock a number of wipe clean pvc tablings and oil cloths that are not only used for covering tables?
Here you can see that this vintage design of Cowboys and Indians has been made into a waterproof bag or shopping, books or school/college stuff. It’s been lined with one of our bright and cheerful childrens fabrics featuring orange dinosaurs and has strong canvas straps stitched firmly between the layers. The whole bag is robust and we think the design has a vintage vibe cool enough for both adults and kids. The fabric is 130cm wide and costs £8.50 per metre and can be bought at either of our shops in Yeovil or Bridport.
We’ve got some lovely new books in stock right now, including Crocheted Cactuses by Sarah Abbondio.
This one particularly appeals appeals to me both as a gardener (the patterns are for botanically correct, named cacti!) and as a beginner at crochet because these gorgeous little cacti are manageably quick makes, and there are useful illustrated guides to stitches and techniques. Also…no watering, ever!
Hardback book, only £6.99 from Livingstone Textiles
Some of the Livingstone Textiles staff had an exciting day out as we headed up to Birmingham at the weekend to look at all the new products being launched this year.
There are some superb new fabrics available from our Reps and we’ve chosen some bright and exciting designs to stock in the shop in the coming months.
We also have a very exciting announcement to make…………..
Many of you already know that we sell a great range of wool and knitting patterns plus all of the accessories at our Yeovil shop and its all proved to be very popular with our customers. We do frequently get asked for it in our Bridport shop as well and so we have listened to you and decided to stock some gorgeous knitting and crochet yarns in our Bridport shop now too!
The yarn we will be stocking comes in an array of beautiful colours and has a nice handle, being made from acrylic it will wash really well and its light twist means that is strong but still really soft and plump.
We’ve also chosen a range of excellent books with a very distinct ‘Bridport feel’ about them so here is a sneak preview.
We’ll be announcing the stock arrival on Facebook so watch this space…………………………
We had to make a door curtain to cover a rear door that was situated at the bottom of a staircase and creating a cold draught in the main living room of this home. A number of fabrics had been mixed by the customer to create a comfortable country living look so we had to find a fabric that didn’t fight with the rest of the colour scheme. After careful consideration of fabric books and several swatches the customer settled on this fabic by Isles. The Dove grey colour really softens that corner of the room while complimenting the colour scheme of blues and being made of wool it has thermal qualities that keep the room warmer. The customer also decided on a thermal lining to eliminate any cold air passing through the cloth and this has made it look very thick and luxurious whilst doing exactly the job intended. Isles Harris can be purchased from Livingstone Textiles and we can send out samples of any colour in the series.
We’ve got a great new book in stock. It shows you how to create some great forms with fabric that appear across textile art pieces. The techniques are all carefully explained and illustrated with some really original ideas that you can put into practice straight away.
Using basic geometric shapes and folds as a starting point, you can learn variations on the basic method and develop different decorative effects. Many of the techniques have been resourced from historical garments and museum pieces as well as more modern books and resources. The author explains that most of her knowledge of smocking came from books published in the 1970’s!
All of the illustrations clearly show the patterns you can make with cuts and folds, pleats and ruffles and the guide at the beginning of the book lists suitable fabrics, tools, measuring techniques, hand sewing methods, pinning, cutting and pressing methods to help you achieve good results. Some brilliant designs can be created by folding, stitching and cutting layered fabrics in different ways and the complimentary colours can create some rather explosive effects when they are cut into and folded back.
These pictures show how to achieve the stunning textures that are often used to create arty scarves and interior design projects. The velvet cushion looks particularly striking and the enclosed stuffing balls give a fabulous bobble effect over the surface so it becomes more like a piece of tactile art.
The instructions for this are very straight forward and the fabric calculations are a lot simpler that you would think. This is such an exciting book and this is definitely one of the projects that we will be trying ourselves.
We’re very excited to offer our customers a 10% discount across all of our Christmas fabrics until the end of January 2019.

Now is also the time to come and browse our extensive collection of craft books too. You can spend a little time with yourself and get acquainted with a new project for the cold months ahead.

Love To Sew are a collection of books that contain quick little projects to make, with small amounts of fabric. Parents and Grandparents often have a hard time finding a hat that a child will keep on its head so let us introduce you to Childrens Sun Hats by Gill Stratton. The childrens hats in this book are delightful and really easy to make, even if you only have the very basic sewing skills. You could make them for your own little ones or as a gift for someone else.
Containing step by step instructions including the measuring of a childs head circumference right through to the top stitching hints for crisp and clean brims, this book is a great way into making hats for the first time. The photographs showing each stage are clear and the instructions are written in laymans terms making them really easy to follow. There are some clever cutting tips to limit the fabric waste and a full list of the sewing equipment and fabrics needed for each project. The designer shows you how and where to use interfacings to give strength to different parts of the hat and shows you how to make some clever and co-ordinating trims and accessories.
At the back of the book you will find half size templates for all of the hats included with simple enlarging instructions and there are some clever tips on upcycling old clothing into hats and linings if you don’t fancy buying anything new. This book can be browsed and purchased at Livingstone Textiles in Bridport, Dorset and we highly reccomend it.
There are some beautiful books in the fabric shop at Livingstone Textiles, Bridport. These are some of our favourite doll making books because they are fanciful and appealing to all age groups.
We also stock a helpful bit of kit for dollmakers called a doll needle. Pop in to the shop and browse our books if you’d like some inspiration for a new project. We stock kapok stuffing, calico, organzas and beautiful buttons for you to style your dream doll.

We are able to loan you the pattern books to check colours and designs in your room, and can give you a no obligation quote for curtains and upholstery from your measurements. If you are not able to measure, one of our seamstresses can visit in the local area to determine your requirements.
Today we are celebrating a wonderful milestone for our Yeovil store. Although they are ‘the new kid on the block’ as far as Livingstone Textiles is concerned, the people of Yeovil have welcomed them into the sewing and home-making community and their first birthday sees them well established supplying wonderful fabrics and curtains to Yeovil and Somerset.
A year ago we saw the end of a very busy time moving stock from Bridport to Yeovil, getting the empty building (previously the Town Museum and then the Scrapstore) ready for occupation, and making everything pretty. Here is a picture from when we were just starting to put stock in place. Since then we have found out what works for Yeovil and the kinds of fabrics, projects and home furnishings you like us to have for our customers – everything from craft books and fabric to Jim Dickens, iLiv and Sanderson fabrics for the home.
You can see below how different the shop is looking now, with sewing machines and knitting yarn as well as all the fabric, and workshops on Saturdays. Why not call in to the Yeovil shop at Manor Stables, Hendford BA20 1UN, opposite the Octagon Theatre to say Happy Birthday.
