We’ve got a great new book in stock. It shows you how to create some great forms with fabric that appear across textile art pieces. The techniques are all carefully explained and illustrated with some really original ideas that you can put into practice straight away.
Using basic geometric shapes and folds as a starting point, you can learn variations on the basic method and develop different decorative effects. Many of the techniques have been resourced from historical garments and museum pieces as well as more modern books and resources. The author explains that most of her knowledge of smocking came from books published in the 1970’s!
All of the illustrations clearly show the patterns you can make with cuts and folds, pleats and ruffles and the guide at the beginning of the book lists suitable fabrics, tools, measuring techniques, hand sewing methods, pinning, cutting and pressing methods to help you achieve good results. Some brilliant designs can be created by folding, stitching and cutting layered fabrics in different ways and the complimentary colours can create some rather explosive effects when they are cut into and folded back.
These pictures show how to achieve the stunning textures that are often used to create arty scarves and interior design projects. The velvet cushion looks particularly striking and the enclosed stuffing balls give a fabulous bobble effect over the surface so it becomes more like a piece of tactile art.
The instructions for this are very straight forward and the fabric calculations are a lot simpler that you would think. This is such an exciting book and this is definitely one of the projects that we will be trying ourselves.
We’re very excited to offer our customers a 10% discount across all of our Christmas fabrics until the end of January 2019.

Love To Sew are a collection of books that contain quick little projects to make, with small amounts of fabric. Parents and Grandparents often have a hard time finding a hat that a child will keep on its head so let us introduce you to Childrens Sun Hats by Gill Stratton. The childrens hats in this book are delightful and really easy to make, even if you only have the very basic sewing skills. You could make them for your own little ones or as a gift for someone else.
Containing step by step instructions including the measuring of a childs head circumference right through to the top stitching hints for crisp and clean brims, this book is a great way into making hats for the first time. The photographs showing each stage are clear and the instructions are written in laymans terms making them really easy to follow. There are some clever cutting tips to limit the fabric waste and a full list of the sewing equipment and fabrics needed for each project. The designer shows you how and where to use interfacings to give strength to different parts of the hat and shows you how to make some clever and co-ordinating trims and accessories.
At the back of the book you will find half size templates for all of the hats included with simple enlarging instructions and there are some clever tips on upcycling old clothing into hats and linings if you don’t fancy buying anything new. This book can be browsed and purchased at Livingstone Textiles in Bridport, Dorset and we highly reccomend it.
There are some beautiful books in the fabric shop at Livingstone Textiles, Bridport. These are some of our favourite doll making books because they are fanciful and appealing to all age groups.

The Knit and Natter Group is a fun and friendly group for those who enjoy knitting and crochet, or for those who would simply love to learn how it’s done!
It is held every Wednesday between 10am and 12pm, at our Yeovil shop. The group is for absolutely anyone, whether you have been knitting or crocheting (maybe even both) for years, or whether you would like to begin learning these crafts. Here you can gather together with other crafty people to share tips and ideas, whilst having a good chat and working on your latest knitting or crochet projects. To keep you all knitting and nattering, refreshments; including tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided.
The group only costs £1 and is a walk-in group, so there is no need to book a place, you can just turn up on the day and join in.
This is a great place to learn more about knitting or crochet from the other members and build on your current skills, it is also an opportunity to share your knowledge with others and exchange tips. A few members have started the group as beginners and worked on smaller projects such as clothes or accessories for babies, by doing this and building up the basics, with help from the other members, they are now able to begin larger projects.

Today we are celebrating a wonderful milestone for our Yeovil store. Although they are ‘the new kid on the block’ as far as Livingstone Textiles is concerned, the people of Yeovil have welcomed them into the sewing and home-making community and their first birthday sees them well established supplying wonderful fabrics and curtains to Yeovil and Somerset.
A year ago we saw the end of a very busy time moving stock from Bridport to Yeovil, getting the empty building (previously the Town Museum and then the Scrapstore) ready for occupation, and making everything pretty. Here is a picture from when we were just starting to put stock in place. Since then we have found out what works for Yeovil and the kinds of fabrics, projects and home furnishings you like us to have for our customers – everything from craft books and fabric to Jim Dickens, iLiv and Sanderson fabrics for the home.
You can see below how different the shop is looking now, with sewing machines and knitting yarn as well as all the fabric, and workshops on Saturdays. Why not call in to the Yeovil shop at Manor Stables, Hendford BA20 1UN, opposite the Octagon Theatre to say Happy Birthday.
Are you looking for a great quality sewing machine at an excellent price for yourself or to give as a present? We think this Juki machine fits the bill perfectly.
Some machines today come with a bewildering array of stitches, but here we are keeping it simple. This machine covers all the basics you need when starting out, or for dressmaking or home furnishing. It has straight and zig-zag stitches as well as a blind hem stitch. It can also handle buttonholes with an automatic stitch to make them easy. The reverse stitch lever is nice and chunky and easily accessible on the front of the machine.
The machine has a bright led long-life light and an automatic needle threader to make setting up to sew extra easy. There is an accessory storage box within the extension table, and you can slide this off to allow for free arm sewing on smaller areas such as cuffs and armholes.
You may already know about the WEEE – Waste Electronic & Electrical Equipment Directive which is now law in the UK. This directive means that you can return waste electrical equipment to the retailer when you purchase a new item. So that means we will take your old machine off your hands on purchase of a new Juki machine. Even better is the fact that these old machines are not sent to landfill. We work with the charity Tools for Self Reliance, who collect the old sewing machines from us. Any which can be repaired or are in working order are sent to be used in Africa to alleviate poverty, with training given to people setting up businesses using the machines. Any machines beyond repair are used for spares so they do not go to waste.
If you need any help with tips or techniques for dressmaking or how to use a sewing machines, you can check out our wonderful range of sewing and craft books, with everything from a basic sewing machine guide through to detailed quilting projects. The sewing machines also come with a DVD showing you how to use the machine.
This machine is an excellent price at £125 and will cover all your basic sewing needs. Call in to our Bridport or Yeovil shops to take a look or purchase.
