Bunting is such a British obsession at the moment and with a summer of celebrations to look forward to we though we’d show you how to make the lovely Summer House Bunting that we enjoy in the shop.
You will need…………………………….. 3m Lightweight Cotton Tape
One 40cm strip of Summer House Bunting
One strip of Calico, 13cm x 80cm
One Strip of Red & White Hearts Poplin 10cm x 57cm
A basic sewing kit, scissors and 1/2m of bondaweb
Firstly, Iron all of the fabrics.
Cut the summerhouse strip into units so that you obtain 3 Summerhouses, 2 Garden Swings, 3 Lawnmowers and two narrower strips with lanterns and a bunny. (You will have a swing, a mower and a bunny left over for another project)
Cut the calico into 8 pieces 10cm x 13cm then Iron Bondaweb on to the wrong side of the hearts poplin.
Make a heart template that will fit inside the calico squares then cut out heart shapes from the red heart poplin. Iron the hearts on to the calico, positioning them 2cm from the bottom edge and central to the middle.
Fold the cotton tape in half to find the mid point. Pin a Summer house motif to the tape, with the midpoint of the tape in the centre of the motif. Make sure you position the motif half way up the tape so that you can fold it over the tops of the motifs to enclose them.
Now arrange the pattern pieces so that they are symmetrically place with hearts motifs in between, allowing a 2cm gap between each.
Turn over the top of the cotton tape to enclose all of the raw edges and either machine or hand sew along the lower edge of the tape to enclose all of the motifs, taking care to remove the pins as you reach them.
Now put the kettle on for a cuppa and admire your handiwork. 🙂
