Creative machine embroidery part 1 – 5 week course

Machine EmbroideryMachine embroidery is creative process used to create pictures, baskets, cushions bags and all manner of sewn items.


In this 5 week course you will explore lots of different techniques that can be used develop your machine embroidery skills. Learn how to use applique, how to use disolvable fabric to create lace, experiment with stitch lengths, shading and colours. Machine embroidery is colourful and textural and you will have the opportunity to use a wide range of materials including organza, silk papers, satins and cottons.


For this course you will need to competent in using a sewing machine. Your machine must have feed dogs that can be lowered.


For the first lesson of this course you will need the following:-


  • Sewing machine in full working order with instruction manual and all of its sewing machine feet.

  • Basic sewing kit to include: dressmaking scissors, unpicker, pins, spare sewing machine needles, hand sewing needles, tailors chalk and a tape measure, ruler

  • An A4 book or ring binder with plastic wallets that you can keep a record of sewing techniques and samples

  • A free motion machine embroidery foot

  • A wooden embroidery hoop approx 18cm diametre

  • 1/2 metre of medium weight calico

  • Assorted threads (machine embroidery uses a lot of thread, so bring a good selection of colours with you. You may also wish to use metallic threads)
