1

Cut zip to size

Cut your continuous zip longer than the opening you want to be zipped. This is important because you’re going to cut away some of the teeth at one end of the zip as we’ve done here; it also gives you the option to cut a bit off if you think it’s all gone wrong! You’ll end up with a fabric tab one each side of the zip, just like on a shop-bought zip.

2

fit the zipper pull or slider

To fit your continuous zip with sliders, open the zip a little and slide the rounded end of the zip (with the two holes) onto one side. Follow the the way it’s facing in our picture if you’re not sure. Slide the zip pull on until it is fully engaged with the teeth on one side. If you’d like to see how to fit a zip slider in more detail, here’s a useful video:

3

The fiddly bit!

It can sometimes take a few attempts to get the hang of this step, so don’t give up! Pulling up gently on the fabric tabs and at the same time pulling down gently on the body of the zip to create a little tension, slide the zip onto the teeth so that it is engaged on both sides. The trick is to keep the fabric tabs pretty level as you slide the zip onto the teeth

3

Need a second zip pull?

If you want two zip pulls on your zip, so that you can open it at each end, fit the second one now in exactly the same way but at the other end of your zip. If your zip isn’t quite even with two zip pulls, close the zip and then open the zip from the end and pull the longer side with a gentle pressure.
